

Barbara Ann Heil Foss, the only child of Eva Irene Peyton Heil and John Gottlieb Heil, was born in Denver, CO on September 25, 1937, and died on December 20, 2010 at Scott & White Hospital in Round Rock, TX of acute respiratory disease syndrome. Her early years were spent on a farm near Sedgwick, CO. Before World War II her parents moved west to California. Barbara spent elementary years in Oakland and graduated from high school in Stockton in 1955. She went to college at the University of California at Berkeley and graduated from the University of California at San Francisco with her B.S. in nursing. She met her first husband, Frank Krbec, in San Francisco. They had two children, Jeffrey Frank and Allison Irene. Barbara became a public health RN in the San Francisco area and then in the foothills of northern CA. After her divorce in 1966, Barbara met and married Roger Vernon Foss. Barbara and Roger moved with Jeff and Allison to Iowa City, IA, where Roger completed his Ph.D. and Barbara worked for the University of Iowa bringing cardiac care services to children in rural areas of the state. In 1972, they moved to Marshall, TX where Barbara worked for the VA Hospital in Shreveport, completed her master’s degree in nursing, and joined the US Army Reserves nurse corps. In 1978, they moved to Monroe, LA to accept positions teaching at Northeast Louisiana University. Barbara became the director of the school of nursing and continued her Army Reserve duties, serving stateside in the first Desert Storm and achieved the rank of Colonel. Barbara also met her goal of completing her Ph.D. at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1988. She retired from Northeast Louisiana University in 1996 and moved to Georgetown, TX to be closer to her daughter Allison. She was a strong believer in education, patriotic, a staunch Democrat, opinionated, self-reliant, and an animal lover. Her early years as a public health nurse shaped her views on the rights of women and racial equality. She was also a survivor, both of breast cancer and Guillain-Barre' Syndrome. She was preceded in death by her beloved father and mother and ex-husband, Roger. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Foss, MD, and wife, Cheryl, of Shreveport, LA and their daughters Kristin, Taylor, and Madison Foss, and daughter Allison Jenkins of Round Rock, TX and husband, Tim, and their children, Kent, Bryce, Mimi, and Lance Jenkins. Donations to the Williamson County, TX Regional Animal Shelter, the Wounded Warrior Project, or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by Barbara. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in 2011. “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way.”
