Betzy was born at Kjelkenes, Norway, the fifth of six children to Ola and Klara Sølvberg. While she was still in high school, her brother Reidar and she escaped by small boat from occupied Norway to England in September, 1941. She served in the Norwegian Army-in-exile in London during the war, reaching the rank of Sergeant in the office of the High Command.
Betzy met her first husband, Robert Barber of Jacksonville, Texas, in London, where they married in November 1944. After the war Betzy returned home to Kjelkenes before immigrating as a war-bride to Texas in 1946. Betzy and her young family followed Bob in his career moves to Houston, Hobbs and Farmington (New Mexico), then back to Houston and on to Venezuela in 1955. Betzy and Bob divorced after many years of marriage.
She returned to Houston, where she worked as a travel agent until 1971, when she met and later married her second husband, Henry Lane. Henry was also in the oil business; Betzy and Henry lived in Houston and South Korea until they retired to New Braunfels. Betzy and Henry spent many happy years together playing tennis and bridge, boating on the Guadalupe River, and traveling the world. Their travels included trips to Alaska, Central and South America, Europe, Russia, Africa, South Asia and China. Betzy was multi-lingual and volunteered, tutoring Spanish-speaking children. Betzy was widowed in 2000, and continued to live in New Braunfels until she moved to Georgetown, Texas to be near her son George.
Betzy lived an adventurous life and loved to travel and learn about different cultures. She is at peace now and has left fond memories for many loved ones.
