Beverly Ann Miller Kuchar; beloved wife, mother, and grandmother; died on Friday, February 19, 2021, after a 21-month battle with cancer. She was 66. A lovely and caring person, she placed high importance on her family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
She was born on March 3, 1954, at St David's Hospital in Austin, Texas. Her parents were John and Joyce Miller. Beverly and her brother, Kenneth, were raised in Austin. When she was young, the family spent many weekends at their lake cabin where she would swim, fish, and water ski. She was a member of the Girl Scouts in elementary school. She loved to spend time playing with friends at the neighborhood park. She graduated from Reagan High School in Austin, where she met her husband, John Richard Kuchar, Jr. They were married at Hyde Park Baptist Church in 1977 and shared 43 happy years together. They had two sons, Jonathan and Jason.
When she was little, Beverly developed a love for animals. She rehabilitated two baby woodpeckers that had fallen from a tree at her father’s job site. She loved riding and taking care of horses. She had many pets over the years, including a Cocker Spaniel, a miniature pot-bellied pig, a parakeet, and a cockatiel. In the early 1980s, John and Beverly adopted and tamed two wild horses.
As a child, Beverly began collecting dolls. As an adult, she collected Hallmark ornaments and was a member of the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club. She loved to save recipes, just like her mother, and had a collection of cookie jars, too. She also cherished the family heirlooms and photographs that she received, and liked learning about their history.
Beverly was creative and artistic. She enjoyed painting with acrylic paints as a young adult and painted many items that she sold in an Austin craft shop. She had a talent for sewing and made some of her own clothes when she was in high school. Her cooking and baking skills delighted her whole family. She would decorate sugar cookies for her son's birthdays that they would share with classmates at school. The cookies were always well-received as gifts to her family at Christmas and other holidays.
Although she had various jobs, her main focus was her family. When her sons were young, they loved to goof off and make her laugh. She was involved with all of their activities: school events, sports, Awana, band, and Scouts. Her love of children led her
to serve on the organizing committee for the Georgetown Creative Playscape project.
She was also a wonderful Grandma. Her grandson loved spending time outside with her and liked feeding the fish in the ponds she built. Beverly was a member of the Austin Pond Society; her ponds were part of the annual pond tour in 2013.
Beverly was always working on different projects. In recent years, she knitted hats that were donated to a charity for boys and girls. Another hobby was crocheting purses and handbags out of recycled plastic bags. She would crochet at doctor appointments or while getting chemo. People who saw her making the bags were always fascinated with the process.
She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May of 2019 and was determined to do whatever it took to fight the cancer. She endured two rounds of chemotherapy and a surgery only to see the cancer persist. She refused to give up the fight until the side effects of the chemotherapy drugs were too much to take.
Before she died, Beverly shared one of the last conversations she had with her mother, before her mother died. Beverly talked to her mom about seeing her again in Heaven. She said, “It will be a twinkle in your eye in time, but a lifetime for us. We will be together again.” Beverly also shared this with her family - “I have had many people ask me how I made my way through all the tough times in the last few years. All I have said is, “One prayer, one breath, and one step at a time, and maybe not always in that order.”
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, John and Joyce Miller, and her brother, Kenneth Miller. She is survived by her husband, John Kuchar; her son, Jason Kuchar; her son and his wife, Jonathan and Kimberly Kuchar; her grandson, Daniel Kuchar; her niece, Shelby Miller; her sister-in-law, Christine Miller; her aunt, Betty Miller; and many cousins.
Beverly brought joy to all of those around her. She made everyone around her happier just for knowing her. She will be remembered with a smile.
