Bill was born October 31, 1924 in Alamo, North Dakota to George and Winnifred Stockman. He was the second child of three children. He spent his early years in Alamo with his parents and two siblings. He attended grade school in Alamo until the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota. There he continued school and graduated from Fargo Central High. He attended North Dakota State University for one year and then enlisted in the Army. His unit was scheduled to go overseas when the war ended. When he returned to civilian life, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he received a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
After graduating he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where he worked for most of his career. During his career with them he worked on improving waterways, designing and constructing dams and the missile sites along the US-Canadian border. He was first sent to their Bismarck, ND office to work on the design and construction of the Garrison Dam. It was a large earth filled dam built on the Missouri River. He later worked at the Omaha, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and New York offices. While in Washington, DC he received his master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Catholic University of America.
While in Bismarck he met Elizabeth (Betty) Thorson. They were married November 12, 1950. They have three children, Linda Carol Stockman, Mark William Stockman and Jane Lynette Stockman, and three Grandchildren, Lindsey Stockman Wagner, Samantha Stockman, and Sophie Stockman. Family was a top priority for Bill. He was very proud of his family and loved them very much. Loyalty was also a top priority for Bill and he was always there for his family. This brought Bill great joy.
Bill loved to build things and farm. He was a master carpenter and a possessed a wide range of mechanical skills (including work on automobiles, HVAC systems, plumbing, wiring etc). Bill owned farm land with his father near Alamo. No matter where the family lived, he was fond of using his vacation time to join his father in the spring and plant wheat on the farm. After Bill retired, he and Betty moved back to North Dakota and he farmed for several years (many with his father). When not farming, he and Betty enjoyed getting together with family and traveling. After he retired from farming, he and Betty moved to Bismarck, ND to be close to his son’s family. Later he and Betty built a home in Sun City, near Georgetown, Texas. This eventually allowed them to spend winters there with their two daughters and granddaughter.
Bill was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His family loves him and will miss him very much.
