Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 31, 1935, to the late Erna and Alois Formanek, Carol grew up to become a woman of profound faith, an exceptionally musical spirit, and the enduring anchor of her family. Her life changed forever in 1953 when, at a Catholic youth dance at a naval shipyard, she met a young sailor named James "Jim" Irving McPherson. It was love at first sight, sparking a beautiful romance. The couple married that same year on July 11, 1953, beginning a deeply devoted 58-year partnership until Jim's passing on June 25, 2012. Carol is now joyfully reunited with him in eternity. As a young Navy wife, Carol left her hometown of Chicago to support Jim during his military service from 1953 to 1954, establishing their first homes in San Francisco and Long Beach, California. Following his honorable discharge, their grand cross-country adventure truly began. In 1963, Jim began a 33-year career with aerospace giant McDonnell-Douglas. Carol masterfully managed a busy, growing household through a whirlwind of twelve relocations across the country, turning each new house into a warm sanctuary.Their journey took them through Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (1954–1955); Las Cruces, New Mexico(1955–1957); a brief stay in Fort Worth, Texas (1957); and La Crescenta, California (1958–1962). They then moved to Missouri, spending 1963 in Hazelwood before settling in Ballwin from 1964 to 1974 to raise their children near the company’s headquarters. In 1974, they moved to the coastal community of Seabrook, Texas, spending seventeen cherished years near the space center. Music and faith were central to Carol's life there; she was a dedicated church choir singer in the late 1970s and early 1980s, famously sharing the choir loft with NASA astronaut Karol "Bo" Bobko, who later shared his vocal talents by singing at her daughter Colleen's wedding in 1983. After a five-year chapter in Bowie, Maryland, from 1991 to 1996, Carol and Jim retired to Georgetown, Texas. Georgetown became Carol’s longest-held and most beloved haven. A woman of steadfast Catholic faith, one of Carol's most cherished memories in retirement was lovingly guiding and supporting Jim through his Adult Confirmation classes in 1999—a beautiful testament to the enduring spiritual bond they shared. For thirty years, her Georgetown home served as the joyful epicenter of family life, where she hosted holidays, cultivated deep neighborhood friendships, and proudly watched her family grow across multiple generations.
