2022, after living a full and active life. He was presently living in the Franklin Park Round Rock
assisted living community in the Teravista subdivision.
Charles was born on July 17th, 1930, in Heidelburg, Pennsylvania to Lorraine June Altmeyer-
Gibbs and Charles William Gibbs, Sr. Much of the early part of his life was spent in Butler,
Pennsylvania.
Charles had several nicknames in his lifetime, (including Chaz and Chuck) but he was most
lovingly referred to by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as “Charley,” and he
preferred it that way. Everyone KNEW he was Dad, Grandpa, or Great Grandpa but he loved to
be called Charley. However, there was one other nickname which amused his family and
friends: “Sweet Lips,” and it will always bring a smile to our hearts and memories.
While in high school, and due in part to his father’s love of the sport, Charley became involved
in boxing and found a lifelong avocation. As a young man he competed in the Golden Gloves
competition in Western Pennsylvania and gained a reputation as a lightning-fast fighter. After
high school, and shortly before the beginning of the Korean war, Charley enlisted in the Army.
During his time in the Service, he was offered a position by his commanding officer, who was a
boxing advocate, as a Boxing Trainer. Subsequently, Charley spent much of his military career
coaching fellow soldiers on how to fight and participating in boxing competitions between
military bases and service branches.
After serving for four years in the Army, he returned to Western Pennsylvania and graduated
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Grove City College.
In 1955, Charley met and married Barbara Lea Robson from Grove City, Pennsylvania. Together
they raised 3 boys, Douglas Charles, Bradley William, and Curtis Lee Gibbs.
All of Charley’s professional life was spent in Pennsylvania where he worked in the Insurance
industry as a claims adjuster and claims auditor for CNA and Erie Insurance. Charley’s career
spanned forty years while working out of offices in Pittsburgh, Sharon and Erie, Pennsylvania.
After retirement, Barb and Charley spent several years living in Sebring, Florida and Killen,
Alabama playing tennis and golf, before settling down in Austin, Texas to be near family.
Charley was widowed in 2019 when the love of his life, Barbara, passed away after 64 years of
marriage. He is survived by his three sons, his five grandchildren, Christopher, Magan, Douglas
II, Haley, and Ava, as well as his more recent joys in life: great-grandchildren Addi, Alia, and
Joseph. In addition to Barbara, he was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Thunder (the
wonder-dog), whom we are certain is happy and in their arms at this very moment.
