Dorothy passed away Thursday, December 9, 2010 at The Wesleyan in Georgetown, Texas. Dorothy was born to Ernest S. Hogg and Tennie M. Gaylor Hogg June 2, 1923 in Lyerly, Georgia. She was the oldest of 8 children. She is survived by her granddaughter, Shellie Lawrence-Jasik; her great-grandsons, Lance Corporal Kenneth Charles Jasik and Christopher Frank Jasik of Aurora Illinois; her sisters, Ellen “Peka” Hesseling and husband Bob of Brownsville, Texas, Betty Jo Mackey of Fox, Oklahoma, Virginia “Joyce” Greer and husband John Greer of Poway, California, and Lynn Lawrence of Georgetown, Texas; daughter-in-law, Joye Lawrence of Wylie, Texas; and numerous nephews and nieces and many dear friends.
In her youth, Dorothy helped her family with farm responsibilities and she was on the Union High School basketball team in Lamesa, Texas. After graduating from high school, she became employed as a machinist in Ft. Worth, Texas proudly serving the US during WWII. She met Kenneth Patrick (KP) Lawrence and married in 1945 and later had Kenneth Gerald (Jerry) Lawrence. They relocated to Brownsville, Texas where she became employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. They later relocated to Lockport, Illinois and she transferred into Illinois Bell and worked for 35 years. After retirement, she continued working part-time at Ace Hardware. She also volunteered at Silver Cross Hospital in Lockport with a record of 11,000 volunteer hours. Over the years she traveled throughout Europe, Asia, Russia, Africa, Mexico, Canada and the US. In 1997, she relocated to Georgetown, Texas to be closer to her sister (Lynn Lawrence) and niece’s family (Patricia Villarreal) and resided in Sun City for several years. She also served as a volunteer at Georgetown Hospital (St. David’s) for 8 years and was a member of the local Kiwanis.
Dorothy loved life and lived life to its fullest. Many of her closest friends called her Dot or Dottie. She will be remembered by many for her generosity, her hospitality, her wittiness and her wonderful spirit to live every day with travel, fun and happiness. Her last years were more challenging due to several medical setbacks. She was well-known and well-liked at The Wesleyan on Scenic Drive. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Dr. Jane Shepherd and the caring staff of The Wesleyan for all their dedication and care giving to Dorothy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband K.P. Lawrence, son K.G. Lawrence, and her brothers Ernest “Buddy” Hogg, Dewey Hogg and Darvin Hogg.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 12, from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at Cook-Walden-Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas and a memorial service will be held Monday, December 13 at 10:00am at Cook-Walden-Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown. Graveside services will be at 2:00pm on Tuesday, December 14 at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Brownsville, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Georgetown Kiwanis or to local charities.
