Eleanor Alcala Arguijo, was called by her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. She was born in Munday, Texas, March 16, 1935 to Samuel Alcala and Maria Teresa Alcala. She was the eldest of nine siblings, six brothers and two sisters.
Eleanor is survived by her daughters: Becky Arguijo, Dallas, Texas, Martha (Alberto) Escobedo, Houston, Texas; Debbie (Larry) Landry, The Woodlands, Texas; Irma (Fred) Arguijo-Rivera, Austin, Texas; son Daniel Arguijo, Jr., Houston, Texas; sisters: Martha (Jesse) Andrade, Munday, Texas; Bertha (Gene) Garcia, Childress, Texas; brothers: Fabian (Dora) Alcala, White Settlement, Texas; Pete (Connie) Alcala Sugarland, Texas; Joe (Gloria), Waxahachie, Texas; Jimmy (Chris) Alcala, Burleson, Texas; Sammy (Angie) Abilene, Texas; twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eleanor married Daniel Arguijo M., the love of her life on November 7, 1953. Early in their marriage, Daniel was called into the ministry in the United Methodist Church serving in the Rio Grande Conference. For over four decades they were appointed and served nine churches throughout Texas. Eleanor played a vital role in the ministry as a pastor’s wife, where she was active in each church appointment and serving on various committees. She particularly enjoyed singing in the choir, participating in the Mujeres Metodistas Unidas (United Methodist Women) and teaching Sunday School. She served on the Rio Grande Conference Hospitality Committee for the Pastors’ Wives for many years.
Eleanor’s genuinely friendly disposition allowed her to work well with children and with the elderly. She began her career working as a teacher’s assistant and working with the elderly in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
For the last fourteen years, Eleanor resided in Georgetown, Texas in the Sun City community. She was an active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She was a co-founder of her neighborhood Prayer Warrior’s Group. In addition she participated in the Red Hat Society and the Sun City Latina Group.
Eleanor’s passions included her love of music, her favorite artists included Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and gospel music. Eleanor was gifted with a green thumb and almost anything she touched bloomed and blossomed. She also enjoyed reading, journaling, ceramics, and sewing. She was especially talented with embroidering and created beautiful handiwork. Eleanor’s greatest joy was the time spent with friends and family. She loved listening to karaoke, dancing, attending plays and going to the movies.
Eleanor was a faithful and devoted disciple and servant of God. Her strong faith and beliefs touched the lives of many. Her legacy will continue in her family and all whose path she crossed. We are assured that she is rejoicing in her heavenly home with those that went before her.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Arguijo M., her parents, Samuel and Maria Teresa Alcala, and brother Ignacio (Nacho) Alcala.
The family would like to thank and extend their gratitude to the health professionals and doctors who provided medical care at Seton Hospitals in Austin and Round Rock, Austin Regional Clinic, Hermann Memorial Hospital in The Woodlands, and Texas Home Health Care. A special mention also goes to Faith in Action and Visiting Angels, Meals On Wheels, and the Area Agency on Aging. Their services and assistance was invaluable to our family.
