

Mrs. Emma Thornton, “Miss Ann”, was born to Clarinza Toms Claiborne and James Lewis Toms on March 19, 1926 in the city of Georgetown, TX.
Emma traveled extensively including Holland, England, Paris and Germany. She was the Owner and Manager of South Plain Funeral Home in Lubbock, TX. Emma graduated from Marshall-Carver High School; Member of the Independent Funeral Directors and Mortician’s Association of Texas, Black Texans Cultural Society; retired employee of the Austin State School (1986); a Charter Member of Georgetown ABWA and Civic Planning committee; faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church serving on a local, state and national level under the pastorate of Rev. Jimmy Johnson, Sr.; National Baptist Convention USA, INC. worker, serving as one of the Vice Presidents of the Women’s Convention under Dr. Gatewood; on the state level, as a Vice President under Dr. S.C. Nash, BM&R State Convention of Texas; many hats in the LaGrange District Association under Moderator F.L. Ross, State and District Teacher in the Women’s Mission Department and an avid participant in the Congress of Christian Education.
She is survived by her cousins, Stella Hall, Zelma Evans, Charles Bailey, Helen Douglas, Douglas and Carolyn Mauldin; special friend, Mr. Ruben Rose, Sr.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held 12pm to 2pm Wednesday, September 21, 2016 followed by a Homegoing Celebration at Macedonia Baptist Church, 206 Martin Luther King in Georgetown, TX 78626. Interment will follow at Cook Walden Cemetery in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Macedonia Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
