Dru,

I'm so sorry to hear of George's passing.  I know you two have had a tough time the past few years (I've kept up with things through Leigh Ann).  Please know that I think of you often, and I will be praying for comfort and peace for you and Wes and the rest of the family.  God will provide what you need - all you have to do is ask. I extend hearfelt symphathy to the family.   I grew up within 2 blocks of George and we were in cub scouts and other activities together early on, and shared many common interest. Our lives were in many respects similar, such as the retail grocery experiences.   Our lives went separate ways and we lost contact.  Now living within only 2 miles of each other in Georgetown, I can only wish I had come to know how close we were that we might have relived and renewed our early days together.

One measure of a man's success in life is the love and devotion he receives from those closest to him.  George Skaggs was such a man.  Dru, in all the 20+ yrs we worked together, you shared so many stories of the fun and loving experiences you had with George.   Your shared love of golf had a major influence on Wes, and I know he will cherish always the close relaitonship he and his dad enjoyed.

George and his sister, Gaye, lived around the corner from us when we moved to Park Blvd. in Austin in January 1951.  It wasn't long before George and my brother Alan, a year younger, became running buddies in the neighborhood, providing many stories and laughs about their daily antics for both of our families.  Though Alan and I lost close contact with George and Gaye after moving to Corpus Christi in 1958, he'll always remain alive and well in our hearts and memories of those wonderful days of our youth.  

My most sincere sympathy and prayers are sent now for Dru, Wesley, and Gaye at this difficult time. I'm confident that all their lives were much fuller and better for having been George's closest loved ones for so many wonderful years.

My first memory of George Skaggs was at Great Hills Golf Club.  We were following some golfers and his son, Wes, was one of the golfers playing.  He watched every move Wes made.  He and Dru were right there at every swing.  You knew what love he had for his son, wife and the game of golf.  Although I am not sure in what order that falls.  It has been my pleasure to have known him for the last 28+ years.  On the day of my Mother's death, George stopped by the house, rang the door bell, came in and gave me a big hug and expressed his condolences for my loss.  He, of course, went on to the golf course.  That was most impressive to me, that he took the time to remember me.  He was a loving, caring, comical man and will be missed dearly.  Love and condolences and many prayers for his family. George was the first person I met on moving to Sun City.  He offered his help, as he did many times later, and was programming my remote for the garage before the movers left.   
Don and I, and CoCo will always remember him and be grateful  for our friendship.  No one ever had better neighbors than you and George.  God bless you, my dear friend.

George and I played golf for over 20 years at Great Hills, always an 84:46 tee time.  He was always the gentlman and I looked  forward to Satudays with he Herb O'Steen and Lee Hello.  There are many more memories.   Wess and our daughter Kori playe many rounds together and , Wess,I will have a bunch of fond memories of the days with your dad and you and Kori.  Sad today when I read about George today,

George always got into trouble because of me, but I was the pill.  He taught me how to ride a bicycle and he tried to teach me how to drive when no one else was brave enough to try. He taught me how to dive, but I was never as good as he was. What a great man he grew up to be. I will truly miss my BIG brother.  I didn't show it, but I loved him a bunch.

We have lost a good friend and a golf buddy, and one of the best putters I have ever played golf with. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with Dru and Wes at this time.

The Mavericks have lost a great competiter and fellow golfer in George. We will miss his good spirit and his speed of play. If George was in the foresome you could safely bet you would not beat him to the tee box on any hole.

"Wes, that is sad news [about your dad].  Your dad had a special kind of energy, that was always positive.  He came to the club with an eagerness that was almost puzzling because it was hard to believe that anyone could enjoy every day of golf that much.  But he did.  We could all learn something from that attitude.  I should have just given him a key to the pro shop because he beat us there regularly and we could have trusted him to do our jobs for us if we were late.  Talk about trust "I always knew that I could shoot craps over the phone with your dad and let him have the dice the whole time.  When I talked with your dad about his work I learned over the course of many discussions about problems he faced at work that he had a knack for problem solving.  He had a can do attitude and I am sure was respected for the way he approached problem solving.  And that, I am sure is just prat of what made him the valued manager that he was.  He will be missed.   I know he is proud of you."  Mark Coward.

I remember George as a caring, happy, always-on-the go guy who loved his family and his golf dearly!  I can still hear his voice when he would call for you at work "Hey Leigh Ann! Is Dru there?"  And of course you were always there for him, then and now.  May the lovely memories of your time together be with you always and please know how much we think of and pray for you and Wes. George was a hard worker who was willing to do whatever needed to be done.  As Manager of Westgate Mall, then Property Manager for all of North Texas, George was never without material for a good story.
