Helen Sue Hampton
July 16, 1931 – October 19, 2018
Helen Sue Roy Hampton, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away Friday, October 19, 2018.
Helen was married for 56 years to her loving husband, J.D. Hampton, who preceded her in death October 19, 2004, 14 years to the day she joined him in Heaven. Helen was born July 16, 1931, in Cleveland, Tennessee, to Rice Cannon Roy and Katie Sue Tinsley Roy. She lived in Cleveland and Chattanooga, Tennessee, before she and J.D. moved to Houston, Texas.
Helen is survived by her two daughters, Janice Sue Hampton Johnson and Susan Aleen Hampton Vaughan, both of Houston, Texas; one grandson, Billy J. D. Johnson and wife, Cynthia Johnson, of Houston, Texas; two great grandsons, Brandon J.D. Johnson, and Andrew Jose Billy Johnson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Willis Glenn Roy.
In 1965, Helen began a long and impressive career in the faith-based not-for-profit retirement home industry, starting as administrator of Bayou Manor and then of The Hallmark, two premier senior living communities in Houston. In 1989, she was called to Georgetown, Texas, to become administrator of the Wesleyan, where she retired from full-time duty. Moving from Houston to Georgetown was a big change but she and J.D. fell in love with the beauty and serenity of Central Texas and the surrounding Texas Hill Country, ultimately choosing to spend the rest of their lives there. Helen was one of the first woman retirement home administrators in Texas, a fact her husband and daughters were immensely proud of. Helen loved her work and loved to travel on business and pleasure. Among the many places she visited included Israel, Jordan, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and 40 of the 50 states, including Hawaii. Helen was a charter member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Houston.
Helen’s family invites her friends and colleagues to visit with them and share memories of this beautiful, remarkable woman from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 26, 2018 at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas.
