Hubert (Bill) B. Sumpter, Sr., of Georgetown, TX, passed away on February 24, 2024, at the age of 95. He was born at home in Brownwood, Texas, on June 24, 1928, to the late James Washington Sumpter and Ethel Nelson Sumpter. He was the youngest of 5 children, all of whom have preceded him in death. Bill was also preceded in death by his 1st wife, Venus Grady, his 2nd wife Norma Fritsch, and step-grandson, Edward Fritsch.
After graduating from Brownwood High School, Bill enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio just as WW II was coming to an end. Bill worked in radio and radar, and it was here that he met his first wife, Venus Grady. They were married on February 14, 1948. After his discharge from the Air Force, Bill and Venus moved to Texas where he ran numerous paper routes and attended Daniel Baker College in Brownwood, TX. Venus preceded Bill in death on October 7, 1986.
He later married Norma Fritsch on December 31, 1988. After their marriage, Bill and Norma settled in Georgetown, TX, where they enjoyed a wonderful 32 years of marriage filled with travel, joy, and their faith in God. They never had an argument, had no secrets, and held hands everywhere they went. She preceded him in death on May 29 of 2020.
He was a teacher for 35 years, having taught math, science, industrial arts, and even coaching basketball. He taught in several school districts in the state of Texas, including Brookesmith, Winters, Industrial (Vanderbilt), and Calhoun (Pt. Lavaca). He was a rock collector, coin collector, and enjoyed using his hands for his many crafts, including woodworking. Bill and Norma also enjoyed sewing on plastic grids and had many household decorations they created together.
Bill was the founder of the Men’s Club at First United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Texas, where he and his second wife Norma attended for many years.
Bill and Norma also enjoyed many years of fun and travel with the Model A club of Georgetown, going on many trips in their Model A named Methyl Ethel.
Bill is survived by his 3 children, Sandra Dusek (David) of New Ulm, Texas; Deborah Tumis (Tommy) of Hallettsville, TX; and Billy Sumpter Jr. (Jill) of Richmond, Texas. Bill is also survived by 3 grandsons: Terrell Tumis of Friendswood, TX; Brad Tumis of Hallettsville, TX; Travis Dusek of Cashmere, Washington; and one granddaughter, Kara Taylor of Abilene, Texas.
He is also survived by 2 step-children, Neil Fritsch (Mary) of Corpus Christi, Tx, and Nancy (Dave) Hawkins, of Brunswick, Maine. He is also survived by one step grandson, Keith Gilbo of Overland Park, Kansas, and four step granddaughters, Christi Birgen of College Station; Norma Fritsch of Port Lavaca, TX; Abby Alcocer of Kerrville, TX; and Heather Smith of Deep River, CT.
A joint memorial service for Bill and Norma Sumpter will be held at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 12:30 PM, with a reception to follow until 3:00 PM.
