December 26, 1927 – April 25, 2018
Betty “Lucille” Knox Allen passed from this world on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 in the presence of her beloved sons who were the joy of her life. She lived an abundant life, fully appreciating the gifts that God gave her.
Lucille was born in Hardeman County, Texas, December 26, 1927, the youngest of five daughters born to William Abraham and Melissa Young Knox. It was difficult for the family to earn a living, yet they were able to enjoy life and each other, maintaining close family ties throughout their lives. Lucille completed her education at Bertram High School during World War II. When the war ended and the local boys came home, she met Earl Van Allen whom she married January 19, 1946 in Bertram, Texas. He always joked that he just couldn’t run fast enough, so Lucille caught him. It was very clear to all who knew Earl and Lucille, they were made for each other. Their lives together included four fine sons who maintained strong family ties and have successful lives.
Life for Lucille was centered around her family. She worked hard throughout her life taking a variety of jobs to help her husband financially support them. There was always time for her to visit with her parents and sisters, as well as her many extended family and friends. She loved to talk with people, always interested in their lives and experiences. Her enjoyment of crochet kept her hands busy making beautiful coverlets, baby clothes and blankets, graciously giving them to family and friends. Lucille loved to travel to see new things and be with other people. She never met a stranger and was very generous with her kindness and her joy for life. She enjoyed attending Leander High School football games, even when it was difficult for her to get around except in her wheelchair. In her later years, her greatest joy was going to her ranch where she enjoyed the outdoors, quiet and watching the livestock grow and thrive. She was a devout member of the Leander Church of Christ, always maintaining her steadfast faith in the Lord.
She will be missed by her family and friends, including her four sons: William Rex “Billy” and wife Gloria of Tow, Kenneth Earl and wife Rebecca of Kingsland, Phillip Gene and wife Debbie of Leander, and Ronald Joe “Ronnie” of Liberty Hill. Others to mourn her loss include seven grandchildren, their spouses, fourteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, as well as her parents and four sisters.
To honor her life, a funeral is planned for Monday, April 30, 10:00 AM at the Leander Church of Christ, 300 Crystal Falls Parkway with her burial following at the Bear Creek Cemetery in Bertram. Visitation with family and friends will be at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, 2900 Williams Drive, on Sunday afternoon, April 29, from 3:00 until 5:00. For those interested, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to the Leander Church of Christ.
