Merle was born on January 22, 1943, in Muleshoe, Texas, the youngest of nine children born to Vallie and Ora Mae Gandy. She grew up surrounded by family and carried that deep love for kinship throughout her life.
She was united in marriage to Gilbert Leroy “Roy” Wilson, with whom she shared 55+ years of devotion, faith, and love.
Merle was preceded in death by her parents, Vallie and Ora Mae Gandy; her first husband, Ernest Wilson; and her siblings Chloris Tarlton, James Gandy, Leonard Gandy, Billy Joe Gandy, and Geraldine “Jerry” Herndon.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gilbert Leroy (Roy) Wilson; her siblings Wilma Hill, Betty Hodges, and Richard Don Gandy; her sons Anthony Wilson, Richard Wilson, and David Wilson; her daughters-in-law Tommie Acquitso-Wilson, Lige Anne Wilson, and Christy Wilson; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Merle was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a strong Christian whose faith guided her life and touched everyone she met. In her quieter moments, she loved working puzzles, creating beautiful quilts, and had a special fondness for roosters. Her grandchildren will especially miss her famous gooey cake, a sweet tradition that brought smiles and togetherness to every gathering.
Merle was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed. Merle’s life leaves a lasting legacy of faith, devotion, and love, and her family finds comfort in knowing she has been welcomed home and reunited with loved ones in Heaven.
Visitation will be held at Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas, on February 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on February 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
