Michael John Hicks
September 16, 1952 – January 4, 2021
Michael John Hicks, passed away January 4, 2021 at the age of 68. He is survived by his sons Max and Zane Cody, daughter Shawn Delaney and mother Janet. He has eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Beth and his father William.
Michael grew up in the turbulent sixties so he had a lot of counterculture rebel in him, but it was tempered by the West Texas traditional values that ran through his veins. His life was defined by the four Fs. Family, Friends, Faith and Fishing. The one word to describe him was: loyal. If you were family or a friend he stayed loyal no matter what. He had several friends of whom he remained friends with for decades including Hal, a friend of fifty years, who was with him the day before he died. His greatest joy was getting together with his male friends to go camp and fish at the coast. They became known as the "Burly Men." Real men doing what real men do.
Despite not graduating from high school, he developed a love of learning. He read more books than anybody I have known. Despite having a difficult upbringing in his youth, he succeeded by having an intense work ethic. Despite having few resources himself, if you needed help, he would help you.
In one of his last conversations with his brother he talked about marrying his wife Beth. He said simply: “I lucked out.” Having missed out on having a father as a role model he decided he would be involved in his children's lives. He modestly told his Brother he would like on his gravestone: “I Showed Up.” As a Husband, Father, Son, Brother and friend Michael John Hicks always showed up.
He is respected, admired and greatly missed.
His life will be honored at a graveside service to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at St. John's Cemetery, 2071 Westinghouse Road, Georgetown, Texas.

Michael John had a great sense of humor, and he told me that he had a special place in his heart for redheads! Thanks to Judy McCarthy and Kim Rath for introducing me to him, and through the years, we became friends. He will be missed! Thoughts go out to his family during these melancholy times. Sincerely, Cata Cagle, Austin, TX
