Nikolaus Onjanow, 90, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away on his birthday, Wednesday May 23, 2012. He was born on May 23, 1922 in the Ukraine province of Russia to parents Michael and Vera (Barkowa) Onjanow. He was married to Nadja (Lysycyna) Onjanow for 63 years who preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by son Michael (Suzanne) of Georgetown, Texas, son Alex (Cheryl) of Spring, Texas and daughter Vera (Bob) Poe of Round Rock, Texas, a grandson Josh Poe of Round Rock, Texas and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Nikolaus was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. World War II displaced him to Germany. He completed his electrical engineering degree in Germany where he married Nadja in 1947. He graduated with honors in 1949 from a technical university in Bremen, Germany. Shortly after, they moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil for Nikolaus to work as an engineer at an electrical motor manufacturing company, and also where sons Michael and Alex were born. The family moved to Buffalo, New York in 1957 where Nikolaus worked at Westinghouse Electric for the next 30 years, and where daughter Vera was born. Westinghouse transferred him to Texas in 1976.
Nikolaus was a gifted and skilled electrical engineer who worked on designing high horsepower electric industrial motors. In 1977, he was recognized by Westinghouse with their most distinguished award, The Order of Merit, for his valuable and lasting contributions in developing solutions to the complex problems of electrical rotating machines.
Nikolaus retired in 1987 to spend time with family and to enjoy gardening, cooking and reading. More recently, Nikolaus was a faithful member and supporter of St John the Forerunner Orthodox Church in Cedar Park, Texas. He was a tonsured Reader in the Orthodox Church and was blessed by service to the church in his last few years.
The family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, May 28, 2012 at St. John the Forerunner Orthodox Church, 800 West Park Street in Cedar Park, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, 29, 2012 at St. John the Forerunner Orthodox Church in Cedar Park with Reverend Father Aidan Wilcoxson officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill, Texas.
