Owen Marcellus Vessels passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on May 5, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. To us, he was Pepa — the steady center of our family, the fixer of everything, the storyteller, and the man who somehow made everyone feel taken care of.
Born in Rineyville, Kentucky, in 1941, Owen attended St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, where he met the love of his life, Joyce, at a school dance. From the journals he kept over the years, it was clear he knew almost immediately that she was the one. They married in 1961 and began their life together driving across the country in a Ford Fairlane with all their belongings packed inside — the beginning of a marriage that would span 65 beautiful years.
Owen proudly served in the Air Force as a B-52 mechanic before building a career with IBM that eventually brought the family to Austin in 1968. But while he worked hard professionally, his greatest pride was always his family.
He was a Cub Scout leader, Little League volunteer, cattle rancher for a time, horse trainer, handyman, mechanic, and unofficial neighborhood repairman. As time went by, the house on Greenhaven Drive became a local landmark. The driveway and street were often full of cars — some ran, some didn’t, and many were simply waiting for Owen’s magic touch. Owen had a natural gift for engines. He was always happy to help a neighbor with a repair, and there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix or rebuild. The only thing that ever truly and stubbornly defied him was the zero-turn lawnmower he wrestled with in his later years.
Even after retiring from IBM, he never really slowed down. Owen was happiest when he was busy helping someone, building something, researching family history, or telling one of the many Vessels stories we all know by heart.
Owen was a giant in our family. His devotion to his faith — giant. His love for Joyce — giant. His steadfast loyalty to his friends — giant. His work ethic — giant. He had an incredible patience and an enduring spirit that anchored everyone around him. If you knew Owen, you knew first and foremost that he was a man of his word with impeccable integrity.
What we’ll miss most is who he was in the everyday moments — his laugh, the twinkle in his eye, the way he always showed up, and the quiet way he made people feel loved and safe.
Owen leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Joyce; his son, Tom Vessels; his son, Joe Vessels, and wife Jill; his daughter, Cathy Doyle, and husband Mitchell; and his daughter, Tammy Vessels-Walton. Owen was the beloved Pepa to six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Ty Vessels and wife Morgan and their son, Leo; Nick Vessels and wife Andrea and their son, Dean; Cayleigh Doyle; Jake Vessels and wife Lauren; McKenna Doyle and fiancé David; and Zach Vessels. He also leaves behind a family forever shaped by his example.
We were incredibly lucky to call him ours. And while we’ll miss him deeply, we know he is with our Heavenly Father, and that the legacy he built through faith, family, and love will continue long after.
