Paul “Buddy” Logan Jackson was born July 22, 1926 and died August 5, 2011 at home in Georgetown, Texas. Paul spent his early years in Newark, Ohio playing baseball and fishing the rivers of Licking County. He attended Newark High school where he was an outstanding athlete earning nine letters, three each in football, basketball, and track. He was a member of the 1942-43 state championship teams in football and basketball, and in 1943-44, he became the only NHS athlete to win a place in All- Ohio AP and UPI in these sports. After graduating from NHS, Paul received a scholarship to play football at the University of Kentucky, but his dreams of playing college ball were ended when he was drafted at the beginning of WWII. After serving in the Navy from 1944-45 in the South Pacific, Paul returned home to Ohio where he attended Ohio State University on the GI Bill and married his high school sweetheart Dorothy Wintringham. In 1950 he graduated from OSU with a BS in education. For the next 30 years Paul was a successful, beloved coach and science teacher. His first coaching positions were at Amsterdam and Philo where he took his basketball teams to the state championships. He ended his four years there with a win loss record of 84-11. Wanting to return to his alma mater, Paul spent the remainder of his career in Newark, first at Wilson Jr. High and then NHS, until his retirement in 1980. In 1987 Paul and Dorothy moved to Scottsdale, AZ where their son Steven lived and worked at Motorola. After Steve died of a heart attack in 2006 they moved to Texas to be near their daughter Peggy and her family. Dorothy, Paul’s wife of 64 years, was the love of his life. During their long and happy life together, she spent countless hours at sports events or sitting in a boat reading while Paul fished. Paul also loved to garden, play golf and was a prolific reader interested in biography, history, poetry and anything by or about Ernest Hemingway. They remained avid Ohio State football fans throughout their lives. Paul is preceded in death by his parents Paul V. Jackson and Margaret M. (Shrock); sister Hulda (Sullivan) Heston; brother William E. Sullivan; son Steven; wife Dorothy. He is survived by his daughter Peggy Sabin (Gordon) of San Marcos, TX; grandson C. Scott Cooper (Michael) of St. Paul MN; granddaughter Meg Debrock (Vincent); great grandchildren Madi, Luc, Remi and Zed, all of San Marcos; and his cousin and life-long friend Jim Dennison of Marquez, TX. In Arizona are Steve’s widow Kara Jackson Royer (Jeff) and her children Kasey, Brittany, Daniel and Kasey’s newborn, Kaydence.
