Robert Dennis Wilson was born January 6, 1937 in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana to Andrew and Gussie Wilson. He was the fourth of six children. Coming from a spiritual family, Robert accepted the Lord into his life at a very young age. He attended school in Alexandria, Louisiana and at the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Navy. Robert moved to Houston, Texas after serving four years in the military.
At the age of 23, he met the love of his life, Odessa Holmes. On November 5, 1960, Robert and Odessa married and soon afterwards, Robert joined the Air Force Reserves. During their marriage, God blessed them with four children: Glenn, Melanie, Kimberly, and Sherri. Robert worked at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas until the base closed in 1976. He then relocated his family to Austin, Texas where he worked at Bergstrom Air Force Base until his retirement.
Robert and Odessa had an unwavering faith in God. The family joined Greater Union Baptist Church in 1976 and he remained a member until his passing. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards. Robert served 34 years 9 months in the military and at the age of 55, he retired so he could “enjoy the rest of his life.”
Robert dedicated his retirement life to attending church, spending time with his family, and playing golf. Robert was a man of wisdom, a pillar of strength, a provider, and a protector. You knew when he was in the room because he roared like a lion, but he had a good heart. He loved God, his family, and his church family deeply. He was a good man. The Lord called his Angel home on December 23, 2019 while surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and grandsons.
Robert was a true Patriarch of the family. When he realized his health was failing, he moved him and his wife closer to his daughters to ensure she would be cared for.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Andrew Wilson and Gussie Wiggins, his brothers Huey and Otis Wilson, his sisters Alma Eatman, Willie Mae Kemper, and Mary Kemper-Gable. Robert leaves to cherish fond memories: His loving and dedicated wife of 59 years, Odessa Wilson, his children Glenn Wilson, Melanie Wilson-Wesley (Douglas), Kimberly Cooper (Jimmie), Sherri Priestley (Lewis). Seven grandsons: Brandon Randolph, Miles Randolph, Jordan Randolph, Lewis Priestley Jr., Christopher Priestley, Glenn Powell Jr., and Garrett Powell. Three brothers: Lindbergh Wilson (Gladys), Rudolph Wilson (Ann), and James (Lil James) Kemper Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved him dearly.
