Roselle Elaine Maxwell was born on September 9, 1929, in San Antonio, the second of five children born to Dr. William Wortham and Rebecca Hightower Maxwell. She grew up in a musical family and performed with her sisters, Virginia and Annette, at concerts in their home. She graduated from Jefferson High School and the University of Texas at Austin (BFA 1950), where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. When she married Curtis T. Braun of Georgetown on July 22, 1950, she moved there and they began their family—Eliese, Arthur Christian (Chris), Melinda (Mindy), Janelle, and Alan Garrett. The family was actively involved at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Walburg.
When Curtis died on June 20, 1966, she took over the family farm and dairy business at a time when women did not do such things. She improved the herd and ran the dairy successfully, earning respect everywhere she went. When her father-in-law died in 1974, she took over management of the A.G. Braun Ranch with the assistance of Ray Braun. During this time, she returned to Southwestern University in Georgetown to complete courses necessary for future training in physical therapy.
After selling the dairy in 1976, the family moved to Lancaster, TX, where Roselle gained admission to the UT Health Science Center at Dallas, now part of the UT Southwestern Medical School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Allied Health Sciences, along with a certificate in Physical Therapy, in 1977. Upon completion, she returned to Georgetown and worked in Austin for 20 years as a Licensed Physical Therapist, specializing in rehabilitation.
Roselle was active in the Georgetown Band Boosters, Aggie Moms, and was named the first “Magnificent Mom” by the Texas Tech University Dads and Moms Association. She enjoyed visiting her children, always journeying to wherever Chris and his family (and Mindy and her family) were stationed in the military. She also traveled to many destinations in the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Europe, the UK, Japan, USSR, and the Caribbean. She loved new experiences, new food, and new scenery.
Roselle was a devoted student of the Bible and attended classes into her 80s. A member of St. John’s Methodist, Georgetown, she attended Sunday school, sang in the choir, and rang hand bells. She supported Wesley Fest and the Kairos Prison Ministry with her cooking and baking skills.
Roselle was a no-nonsense mother, a great friend, a loving grandmother, and a caring co-worker. She had learned how to love unconditionally, to accept others, and to show the love of Jesus. She lived each day and enjoyed what it had to offer. She had no regrets in life.
At age 78, she moved into Wesleyan at Estrella Independent Living. There she made many new friends and greeted old ones, and took part in Bible study, devotions, choir, and group activities. She was so grateful for her life there that she contributed to the Benevolence Fund and the building expansion to enable others to experience what she had herself experienced.
Roselle was preceded in death by her parents; husband Curtis; in-laws A.G. and Rosa Schawe Braun, and sons-in-law Dennis Teasdale and Kirk Watson; sister Virginia Maxwell Hickfang; brothers Malcolm Maxwell and Dr. Garrett Maxwell; and son Chris.
She is survived by her sister Annette Morriss of Austin; sister-in-law Joyce Maxwell of Dallas; daughters Eliese Braun Teasdale and Janelle Braun of Garland, TX; daughter Mindy Braun Johnson and husband, Everett, of Seguin, TX; son Alan Braun and wife, Andra, of Richardson, TX; daughter-in-law Carol Braun Annema and husband, Terry, of Bow, WA; 11 grandchildren: Holly Braun, Lauren Braun, and Carter Annema; Rebecca Johnson, Mark Johnson, Kimberly Johnson, Melanie Johnson, Kaitlin Johnson, and Daniel Johnson; Garrett Braun and Nicholas Braun; two great-grandchildren: Emma Johnson and William Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
