Ruby was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church where she also attended school. It was during her first grade year at Zion Lutheran School that she caught the eye of her future husband Carl, though they didn’t meet until she was 10 and he was 15, in the middle of a cotton field. Six years later Carl began courting Ruby and in 1938 they were married at the home of her mother, Minnie Riske.
During her lifetime she was a nanny for a family, traveling to New York and much later worked in the Georgetown Independent School District as a cafeteria cook. None of her work though, kept her from being by her husband’s side or taking care of her children and home.
Ruby was a devoted wife, working the fields alongside Carl, a loving mother of three children, and a doting grandmother and great grandmother to 18. She was also an extraordinary cook, known to her family and friends for her coffee cake, jellies, pickles, pot roast and noodles. Being ever practical, she loved planting a garden and did so right up until 2009 when she directed her son’s to do it for her, under her direct supervision, of course.
She will be missed by all those who knew her and loved her so very much. She has taught us much about strength of character and leaves a legacy of love and Christian devotion for her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Carl Buchhorn; her children, Odell Buchhorn and wife Iva of Burnett, TX, Marilyn Thoene and husband Chuck of Walburg, TX, Larry Buchhorn and wife Lorin of Lakeway, TX; grandchildren, Becky Pettyjohn and husband Tom of Fisher, TX, Scott Buchhorn of Round Rock, TX, Gary Thoene and wife Kaaren of Georgetown, TX, Mike Thoene of Georgetown, TX, Alison King and husband Brad of Georgetown, TX, Nick Buchhorn and wife Charissa of Tomball, TX, and Heidi Buchhorn of San Antonio, TX; as well as eleven great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Gladys Doerfler of Weir, TX and Bernice Huf and husband Anton of Taylor, TX.
The family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas.
