Ruth C. Olson

Ruth Cleveland Olson, 90, of Georgetown, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2011. A memorial service celebrating Ruth’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11 AM at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Ruth was born in Buda, Texas on August 7, 1920 to the late John Thomas and Josephine Brumley Cleveland. She is preceded in death by her son, Doug Olson in 1993; her brother, JT Cleveland; and her sisters, Revice Kegler and Marguerite Kyle. Ruth spent most of her childhood in Buda and Kyle. After graduation from high school, Ruth attended and graduated from Draughon’s Business College. After college, she worked for Edgar Tobin Aerial Surveyors and the Broadway National Bank in San Antonio. It was during her time at Draughon’s that she met the love of her life, Ed Olson. Married on July 7, 1941 in Kyle, Texas, Ruth followed Ed during his Army Air Corps pilot training in California, New Mexico, South Dakota and Nebraska. After WWII, they returned to Texas where Ruth pursued being a homemaker and mother to her 2 sons in San Antonio. She then opened The Swedish Shop, which was recognized as the gift shop to go for anything “Swedish”. Additionally, Ruth was actively involved with the San Antonio Conservation Society and its Fiesta Committee. In 1981, Ruth and Ed moved to the Olson family farm near Taylor and 1984 to Georgetown where they became active members of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She and Ed volunteered at The Caring Place, the Georgetown Historical Society and the Information Center on the square in Georgetown. Her giving spirit and contributions to her community will be truly missed. Ruth leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of almost 70 years, Ed Olson and her son Larry Olson; along with other loving close friends and family.
