Velma Jean (Jean) Brackin went to be with the Lord and her loving husband of 68 years on August 25, 2014. She was born in Meridian, Mississippi on December 19, 1926 to James Claude (JC) Johnston and Flora Mae McLemore. Jean completed twelve years of school and some college education.
She loved numbers. She made her civil service career with the United States Air Force as a cost accountant. Upon retirement, she continued her civil service career with the USDA.
Jean welcomed everyone. She wanted everyone to feel at home in her presence. She loved her family fiercely. Her great cooking fed the masses at family gatherings, and she will definitely be remembered wading into the water to throw the line out for the daily catch. There is always a story centered around a fishing trip or some traveling adventure.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents JC and Flora, a brother; Vernon Johnston of Harlingen, Texas, and three sisters, Lois Marsh of Pflugerville, Texas; Louise Wortman; Gladys James from Fort Worth, Texas and her husband John (Johnny) Brackin.
She is survived by one sister, Frances Ratliff of Austin, Texas and one brother, RD Johnston of Sinton, Texas; five children; Dianne Baldwin (Bob) of Round Rock, Texas; Gary Brackin (Tena) of Austin, Texas; Vickie Parvin (Terry) of Waco, Texas; Ike Brackin (Debbie) of Corpus Christi, Texas,; Michael Brackin (Kathy) of Kansas City, Kansas; ten grandchildren; Jeffrey Baldwin, John Baldwin, Jimmie Baldwin, Jeannie Medlin, Gary Brackin, Jr., Marty Parvin, Amy Jennings, Tabitha Richter, Jocelyn Brackin, Jeremy Brackin; fifteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many other extended family members. A true legacy of love.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 in the chapel of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home with Reverend Dennis Moody officiating. Entombment to follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Mausoleum Chapel in Pflugerville, Texas. A reception will follow at Jimmie and Tamitha Baldwin's home.
