Winnie Marie Russell was born in Liberty Hill, Texas on January 8, 1929 to parents Bird A. Russell and Mabel Smith Russell. She passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on August 13, 2023 where she had lived for the past 4 years in a care facility close to her youngest son.
She was raised on the farm north of Liberty Hill as the youngest of seven siblings. The siblings in age order were Abbie Mae Russell Bebee, Lonnie Lee Russell, Ora Iva Russell Webb, Ruby Pearl Russell Waley, Harvie Odell Russell, George Elzie Russell and Winnie Marie Russell Pigott. Her parents and siblings predeceased her.
She attended the country school there named Concord and then Liberty Hill High School where she graduated at the age of 17. After high school she moved to Austin where she lived with relatives while going to business school and began employment with “the telephone company” as an operator. Originally it was Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and later AT&T Telephone Company.
She married Richard Pigott who was a veterinary student and they lived in College Station while he attended school. They had three children, Lora G. Pigott, James T. Pigott and Patrick L. Pigott. She is survived by her children, their spouses and their children and grandchildren with the exception of granddaughter Melissa Pigott. Through the years, Winnie had a variety of cats and loved every one of them as she did her family. She was divorced and never remarried.
Winnie retired from AT&T after a long career. After retirement she volunteered for the Blood and Tissue Center in Austin. She was hired there and was fondly known to many of the donors. Any time there was a shortage of a type of blood, she was on the phone calling donors asking for help filling the need. She loved working there and dealing with the donors. At the age of 81 she was laid off along with a large number of other employees. She was devastated with the loss of that job and missed the contact with people that she had grown to love.
Winnie loved going and doing anything! She especially loved to shop and many of those shopping outings were with her best friend for life & niece, Peggy Waley Millard. Winnie and Peggy shared a duplex in Austin for 38 years and had lots of shopping trips and other expeditions!
She was a long-time member of the church of Christ. When she lived in south Austin, she was a member at Southside Church of Christ and later in north Austin at Cameron Road Church of Christ. She always had joy in her heart when she was with the church family.
