

Winnie “The Cake Lady” Gebauer Smith, passed away on January 25, 2018, she was 105. Winnie was born to Joseph and Theresa V. Hilscher Gebauer on October 6, 1912 in Pecan Spring Community, Texas, which later became Austin. She met Joseph Smith some years later and they soon were married by the Austin Justice of the Peace on June 11, 1949. She and her husband Joe lived in Austin until 1969, when they moved to Georgetown. Winnie was a waitress for over 40 years. She was always willing to help out her neighbors in any way she could. She enjoyed playing dominoes, bingo, and card games with her friends and neighbors. Winnie loved baking and cooking, she even gained the name “The Cake Lady” by the city of Georgetown because of the holiday cakes she would make year after year. In December of 2003, The Williamson County Sun wrote an article about her delicious fruit cakes, “In addition to spending time cooking, Ms. Smith helps out her friends and neighbors by driving them to doctor’s appointments and the store”, Winnie chuckled with the response, “There are all these old people who can’t drive, and I’m the oldest!” As a long-time member of St. Helen Catholic Church, she became close friends with a lot of the Congregation. She was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary, Post 8587.Winnie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph Smith, brothers Fred, John, Robert, Jody, and Louis Gebauer, sisters Ann Lawson, Elizabeth Arnold, and Marie Vane. Those left to cherish her memory include her step daughter Sammye Bryant and many nieces, nephews, and friends.A Graveside service will take place at IOOF Cemetery, in Georgetown, Texas, on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Winnie’s honor to Altus Hospice or the Charity of your choice.
