Mark Gruenewald, 68, of Georgiana, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on March 4, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 15, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Irvin and Audrey Gruenewald. He was the youngest of three siblings. Mark graduated with honors from Georgiana High School in 1969 and The University of Alabama in 1973 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Accounting. He was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. On August 5, 1973 he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Brenda Bush Gruenewald, who survives. Mark and his parents, Irvin and Audrey Gruenewald, owned and operated the Western Auto Associate Store in Georgiana from 1952 until their retirement in 1989. In 2004, Mark, "The Candy Man," was awarded the first-ever Citizen of the Year Award for Butler County. He was presented with a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Bob Riley and Representative Charles Newton. This award was voted on by the citizens of Butler County for his life-long service to others. Mark's passions included Alabama Football, listening to music and trading stocks. He also enjoyed watching movies, studying history (especially the Civil War) and, most of all, spending time with his wife, children and grand-children. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda Gruenewald of Georgiana; daughter and son-in-law, Monica Gruenewald-Pate and Jimmy Pate of Chandler, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Gruenewald and Diane Gruenewald of Hendersonville, TN; grandchildren, Mariah Pate-Pierce of Birmingham, AL, Maddy and Jayce Pate of Chandler, AZ; brothers Johnny Gruenewald of Anniston, AL and Chris Gruenewald of Mobile, AL and a host of family and friends. My precious Brenda,
How my heart hurts for you. Just hold tight to all the memories you and Mark made together. You guys did something not many can say they accomplished. Your love endured. I've spent this week thinking about things I recall about y'all. One thing I don't know if I ever told you or Mark is about my special little kitten daddy got me because my cat I'd had forever died. Amellia Lowery and Melinda had a mama Siamese with 3 little boy kittens. I think Melinda was dating Chris or Johnny at the time so the 3 kitties were Mark, Chris and Johnny. I got Mark. He was such a loving kitten. I think that made your Mark even more special to me. I love you so very much and as I told you last night we are here for you. Anything you need just call us. 💕Jo

Brenda and family....never forget that Mark was a loving husband and loving father...but for us...we remember a great friend and neighbor....He brought a lot of love to so many people...I know that I will always remember his easy loving EVERYBODY attitude...I came home from work several different times and caught him spending time with mother and daddy...he made their day (Agnes and Bernice Peavy) other times I would know that he had been there...THE BAG OF CANDY.... gave him away.... that is memory I will always cherish.
I pray that God will give you and your family comfort in yhe days ahead.
