On Saturday, Sept 10th, 2022, our Lord saw our Dad, Domingo “Sonny” Marez, Sr, age 71, of Gering, Nebraska, getting tired and gave him eternal rest and peace in a room filled with love and his family by his side.
Funeral services include a rosary on Friday, September 16 at 7 PM with funeral mass held on Saturday, September 17 at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Church with Father Mike McDonald celebrating. Visitation will be Thursday and Friday from 9-5 pm at Gering Memorial Chapel. Fond memories and condolences may be left at www.geringchapel.com.
Sonny was born March 11th, 1951 in Scottsbluff to Reynaldo and Rita (Rodriguez) Marez. He graduated from Gering High School in 1969, and continued studies at WNCC. He was an extraordinarily hard worker employed at Swire Coca-Cola, Aurora Loan Services, and Allo, where he spent his final years.
He was a brother, uncle, Dad, and grandpa. He was always a loving and kind person with a wonderful sense of humor, and was always there for us when we needed him. He was a very talented drummer and belonged to the “Brown Sugar Band”, which he and his brother started at a young age. The band was privileged to have recorded with Norman Petty (producer of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and other artists). They performed for many years in the tristate area until the mid-2000s, and re-united in 2016 to open up for Los Lonely Boys. Aside from music, he enjoyed hanging out with family, gardening, trips to Fort Robinson and the Black Hills, and loved to go fishing with his grandkids. He made the best posole and chili soups. Through the years of his life, he shared his wisdom, his knowledge, and his faith with so many of us.
Sonny is survived by his wife Lili; sons Sonny (Crystal), Nick (Brittany), and daughter Melissa (Ernie) Aguallo; grandchildren, brother Alfonso (Delphine), numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is now reunited with the original Brown Sugar Band (Tony) and performing “Night Time Lady” for his family, including his son Frankie, brother Freddie, his parents and many others before him.
