It is with a deep sadness of heart that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Belinda Carol (Penny) Vater on February 18, 2021 surrounded with the love of her family on the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Glace Bay on November 25, 1942 to Leander and Harriet (Jones) Penny. Belinda will be missed by her loving children, daughter Linda (Michael) and son George (Debbie), adored grandchildren Noah and Hannah as well as her brother Leander and sisters-in-law Valma Poirier and Margie Penny, many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Belinda was a force of nature and rarely stood still for long. One of her favorite activities was walking, normally with her “bestie”, friend and walking partner, Patsy Skalaa. They could be seen on one of their normal routes or shopping up a storm while walking around the mall. Next to a good walk, shopping whether here, one of her many shopping trips to Halifax or while away, any excuse to go find some “treasures” would do. Belinda also loved working in the yard. She also enjoyed her regular weekly outings to bingo and playing darts. She had a heart of gold and always put the needs of others before her own.
Besides her parents, Belinda was predeceased by her husband George.
A very special thank you to her wonderful neighbors Brian and Jane Moore and Robert and Loretta Campbell who were so kind and helpful while she was ill.
The family would like to thank Dr. Saliba and staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre in Sydney, the Dr’s and staff of CBRH 4A and Palliative Care for the care and attention shown to Belinda. Also special thanks to Dr. Aboud and Dr. D’Intino for making her so comfortable in her last days.
Cremation has taken place. By request, there will be no visitation or service. A family graveside service will take place in Forest Haven Cemetery at a later date. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.pattenfuneral.com. If desired, donations in Belinda’s memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
