Donald Allister Spencer

March 27, 1936January 16, 2020

The family is saddened to announce that Allister Spencer passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. He will forever be remembered by his beloved wife of 61 years, Donelda (Kinslow); daughter, Beverley; sons, Donald (Dawn Goddard) and Bruce (Christine Lemoyne); grandsons, Michael and Duncan; sister-in-law, Valerie Kinslow (Michelle Hamelin); cousins, Norma, Sandra, Helen, Audrey and their families. He will be sadly missed by Sammi and Hudson.

Born in Port Morien, Allister spent most of his adult life away as he pursued his career with the Bank of Montreal in Quebec, New Brunswick and other parts of Nova Scotia. But he never forgot his Cape Breton roots and instilled a love of the island in his children during frequent visits home. He and Donelda returned to Port Morien after retirement and spent 26 happy years in the family home, hosting family and friends, delighting in the birds and squirrels and a succession of house cats, and giving back to the community.

Allister brought the skills and professionalism that he displayed during his successful banking career to his tireless volunteer work for St. John’s United Church and Black Brook Cemetery. He also performed countless acts of kindness for friends and neighbours and was devoted to the care of his Aunt Ada (Spencer), Aunt Etta (Penny) and mother, Sally (Thomas) in their final years. He exemplified the timeless values of community service and devotion to family. Above all, he was a loving husband, a wise and gentle father and simply a very good man.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Murphy, Dr. Mandat Maharaj and the nurses of Unit 4C for their compassionate care. Funeral service followed by a reception will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay, Rev. Bob Biggar officiating. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Black Brook Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Allister’s memory may be made to St. John’s United Church, Port Morien or the Glace Bay Food Bank. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.pattenfuneral.com

Donelda, my deepest condolence to you on Allister's death. I was richly blessed by his presence when I arrived in Donkin-Morien many years ago, and it was nice to catch up when I spoke to him this past year on the phone.

May God bless and comfort you in this time.
