It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Margaret Andrews (Smith), 97, on Wednesday September 7 at The Cove Guest Home in Sydney. Elizabeth was born and lived most of her life in Port Morien. Her parents were Robert Stanley Smith of Birch Grove and Christine MacPherson of Sand Lake. She qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1946 and spent her working years at the Glace Bay General Hospital. In August 1949 she married Kenneth Andrews, also of Port Morien. They had two children, Dr Robert (Ruth) Andrews of Marion Bridge and Gwenyth Andrews (Martin), currently living in Australia.
During her long life, Elizabeth enjoyed crafting, especially knitting and rug hooking, and was an inveterate reader of novels. She travelled to Australia several times, as well as to England and the US. She was a lifelong member of St Johns United Church in Port Morien. Her last years spent in assisted living at Williston House and Ridout House were happy ones.
Elizabeth’s husband Kenneth predeceased her in 2010. She is survived by both her children, as well as three grandsons and one great grandson. These are Blake (Chase) Andrews of Marietta GA; Gavin (Nicole) Andrews of Sydney; Rory (Malin) Andrews of Linkoping, Sweden; and Lochlan Andrews of Marietta. She also has three surviving siblings: Joyce (Joe, deceased) Peach of Port Morien, Helen (Ted) Peach of Kingston NS, and Gordon (Lois) Smith of Sydney, as well as a surviving sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of Glace Bay. Her sister Mary and brothers Robert, Ivan, and Ewen predeceased her.
In accordance with Elizabeth’s wishes, there will be no visiting or service. Everyone is welcome at Elizabeth’s interment at Black Brook Cemetery on Friday 16 September at 11 am. A reception at Port Morien legion will follow. Online condolences may be sent to www.pattenfuneral.com. Donations in Elizabeth’s name may be sent to the Black Brook Cemetery Fund or to the charity of your choice.
