Died peacefully at Glace Bay General Hospital, on Tuesday 24 April 2018. Elsie was the beloved wife of Alexander “Cuzzer” McDonald (deceased 2013) and the daughter of George and Mary Bessie Green (nee MacLeod) of Donkin, NS. She grew up in the family home behind St Luke’s United Church, with her three sisters and two brothers. The Green children were raised almost singlehandedly by Mary Bessie, as their father, after surviving World War l, was killed in a mining accident near Donkin in 1928. At that time, the children were all under the age of seven. Life was difficult but the bond among them was strong through the forceful character of their mother Mary Bessie. Christian values and singing, both in church choirs and at home, were important parts of Elsie’s upbringing and she maintained interest in both until her final years. She was a founding member of Newsom United Church since its creation in 1958, a life member of the United Church Women and a long standing member of the choir. Alex and Elsie met in Glace Bay and after marrying in 1947, moved into 114 School Street where they lived for over 50 years and raised their two sons, Bruce and Eric. In 2006 they moved from their beloved home to South Street where they cultivated new friends in their small cull–de sac. Elsie loved to play cribbage with Alex, going to bingo with her sister Ann and spending summer evenings watching her Toronto Blue Jays. Elsie was predeceased by her parents, her husband Alex, her sisters Ellen Peach and Doris MacLeod and brothers Gordon and Lawrence. She is survived by sons Bruce (Lotta Harasym) Ottawa and Eric, Glace Bay, sister Ann Mackenzie, Glace Bay and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 27, from 2-4 pm and from 7-9 pm at Patton’s Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Service will be held on Saturday April 28 @ 11:00am at Newsom United Church, 3 Dominion St. Glace Bay with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment at a later date in Forest Haven Cemetery.
