Glace Bay
This obituary was composed by Jean herself
We, the family of Evelyn Jean Hoffman, are saddened to announce her passing on March 12, 2024 at the Glace Bay hospital with loving family at her side.
Born in Glace Bay on June 23, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Vivian (Mercer) Bishop.
She grew up on Highland St where there were always kids to hang out with and lots of fun to enjoy. Her best childhood memories were the smells of her mother’s baking and of the homemade chow as she went down the yard from school in the fall. She always wanted a sibling and after 9 years of being an only child her sister was born. Even though there was a large age gap they became best friends and confidantes throughout their lives. She was so grateful for her love and support after the passing of her husband.
Jean graduated from Morrison Glace Bay High School and went on to Mount Allison University where she earned her B.A. She attended Dalhousie where she obtained her teaching certificate. She also attended UCCB where she upgraded her teaching certificate.
Most of her teaching career was spent in the village of Donkin where she made lifelong friends. She was an avid bowler and belonged to the Teachers Bowling as well as various leagues. She became interested in golf beginning at Lionel’s and making her way to Lingan where she enjoyed many years of fun filled days with her golf buddies Linda, Jean and Eric. In her last years she ended up at Lionel’s again with her good friend Linda. Together they huffed and puffed their way around the course.
She enjoyed travelling and when her family was young travelled every March Break to Florida and every summer to the States. Upon retirement she and Butch travelled to New York City as well as to shopping trips in Portland and Bangor. She always looked forward to these expeditions. She enjoyed a good laugh, lunch with friends and the occasional glass of wine. She hated anything domestic and cleaned and cooked begrudgingly. She always said do not look in my closets or bureau drawers. Unlike her mother and sister she was not the person of neatness. What you could see appeared neat but what you couldn’t see- LOOK OUT!!!
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Butch, in-laws Max and Catherine Hoffman, brother in laws Kenny Hoffman, Jimmy Hoffman and Bruce Sarty.
Butch’s passing was very traumatic for her and affected her deeply. They had been together for over fifty years and endured many ups and downs during that time. As long as she had him she felt safe and cared for. When he was gone there was such a tremendous sense of loss. With the help of family she was able to cope but her life was never the same. She missed him terribly.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Lori, son Kyle, grandsons Mitchell and Keighan whom she raised. Also survived by grandsons Manix and Kingston. She is also survived by her only sister Terry Lynn Sheppard (Doug); sister in laws her good friend Betty Saccary, Loretta Hoffman, Marilyn Sarty and brother in law Ralph (Belinda) Hoffman.
There will be no visitation Cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held at Black Brook Cemetery.

A mother’s love is a blessing
Wherever you may roam
Keep her while she’s living
You’ll miss her when she’s gone
Love her as in childhood
When feeble, old and gray
For you’ll never miss a mother’s Love
Till she’s buried beneath the clay.
