Although born in Truro, N.S. to Lavinia (Allen) Butts he was raised by his beloved grandparents, Julia and Bob Allen, on Bell Island, Newfoundland. As a young man, Dad proudly served in the British Royal Navy and often spoke of his naval service that included actions in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Dad worked most of his life as a car inspector beginning on the S&L Railroad (later Devco). In later years he was an active member of the John Bernard Croak,Branch 3, Royal Canadian Legion. He was a proud member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and Royal Black Institution having attained all but the last ½ degree of that order, which could only be presented in Northern Ireland. Dad was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and for many years enjoyed the relaxation of his ‘cabin’ and playing horseshoes at Sangaree. He loved to sing and entertain and often would make us all laugh, donning some pretty unusual ‘hats’. A humble and gentle man, he had an easygoing manner and a love of life that made him the beautiful father and husband that we knew.
Everett is survived by two daughters; Evelyn MacGillivary (Joe), Jean (Mel) Smith and one son, Herbert (Arlene) Allen, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean ‘Smitty’, cherished great grandchild, Eric Evan Jobe and wonderful son in law Gerard MacGillivary.
