Glace Bay
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother. George Barrett passed away peacefully in the home in which he was born surrounded by his loving family. George retired from the town of Glace Bay Purchasing Department in 1995. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church serving as warden, a member of the parish council and as a licensed lay reader. He also enjoyed his involvement with the social club. George cherished the time spent at his cottage on Gabarus Lake where he made many friends.
George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mae (Atkinson); daughter Rosemary (Arthur) Gillis; son Joey (Shealene)Barrett; his only grandson and best buddy Brett Gillis and his three precious granddaughters Kailin Gillis, Alexandra and Lauren Barrett. Poppy was so proud of all their accomplishments, especially their hockey endeavors. Also surviving are brothers Bill (Florence), Donald “Duckie” (Shirley), Ken (Linda); sisters Mary MacDougall, Verda MacKenzie and sisters-in-law Ethel and Bess Barrett.
Predeceased by parents Joe and Elizabeth Barrett; brothers Abe, Max (Lily), Jim(Becky) and Joe; sister Sarah (Ed) and brothers -in-law Charlie MacDougall and Jack MacKenzie. He was also predeceased by a sister in infancy, Annie Elizabeth.
Visitation for the late George Barrett will be Monday March 4th from 2-4&7-9 at Patten Funeral Home ,71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday March 5th at St. Mary’s Anglican Church at 11am with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Donations in George’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of one’s choice.
