Gerald Charles Smith, Birch Grove Sadly, we the family wish to announce the passing of a wonderful father, poppy, brother, uncle and friend on April 5th 2020. Jerry passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by family. Jerry was born in Birch Grove, on April 29,1939 to the late Eugene and Alice (Taylor) Smith. Dad touched the lives of many people with his smile and laugh and maintained his sense of humour to the end, and he loved telling stories and having a good joke. He worked for over 34 years in the coal mines. He worked at 4-Star, #26, Prince and Lingan Colliers. One of his most proud accomplishments, was his involvement with the Birch Grove Volunteer Fire Department, which he served for over 62 years and was retired Fire Chief, and honorary member and continued to take part in the fire department. He also loved to sing. He was a member of several choirs over the years; St. Paul’s Anglican Choir, Port Morien and St. Mary’s Choir, Glace Bay, the Firemans Choir and the Inspirational Singers. He volunteered as an usher at Center 200 for over 20 years, he loved chatting with everyone and watching the Eagles play. He also loved to bowl and belonged to the Bush and Devco Pensioners Leagues in Glace Bay and in his younger years a favorite pastime was spending many summers camping with his family. Dad always enjoyed and cherished his Sunday conversations with his “old Buddy” Florian, PEI and the Boys in Boston, MA. He was a life-long resident of Birch Grove, a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien. He will be sadly missed by his children Lana (Winston), Glace Bay and Glenn, Birch Grove; he was fondly known as ‘Poppy’ by his four grandchildren, Ally (James), Jacob, Carter and Ethan as well as many nieces and nephews. Jerry is also survived by his brother Sheldon (Bernadette), Birch Grove, and sister- in- law Donna, Birch Grove. Besides his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his brothers Ralph and Kenneth and sister-in-law Doreen. In following Jerry’s wishes cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. Visitation and service will be announced at a later date. Online condolences can be sent to www.pattenfuneral.com At this time, we would like to thank the staff of the ICU Unit, at the CB Regional Hospital for their care and support during Dad’s brief stay.

Lana and Glenn, we just wanted to express our sympathies to you in the passing of your Dad. We did not know he was ailing, seems like only yesterday that we met at the grocery store and had a great conversation. I (Donna) spent many many years with Jerry at Knox lanes enjoying bowling while exchanging stories. Also the many many chats Gary had with Lana while spending hours at the ICU praying for a positive outcome. May you be blessed with lots of warm memories of your Dad for years to come, God bless.
