It is with extremely heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of a loving husband, father, brother and friend Gordon Robert ‘Gordie’ Taylor on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Glace Bay General Hospital, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay on June 1, 1927, he was a son of the late James and Margaret (Robinson) Taylor.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the armed forces for three years.
Throughout his working years, he was employed with Cape Breton Development Corporation (Devco) for 46 years, starting out as a draftsman and land surveyor and retiring as Property Manager in 1989.
As an active member of Knox United Church, Gordie enjoyed singing in the church choir, was a life member of Knox Session and served on many other committees as well as helping out wherever needed.
Gordie was also a member of the I.O.O.F Aberdeen Lodge #68, serving as secretary/treasurer and was a past Noble Grand.
He was an active member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 3 (John Bernard Croak), serving on the executive committee.
Gordie enjoyed being a very active member of his community, volunteering his time for numerous organizations throughout the years. He also very much enjoyed his trips to visit family in Halifax and Ontario.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Annie Bennett; daughter Joanne, Glace Bay; sons David (Margie), Jim (Shelly), both of Glace Bay; daughter in law Juanita Taylor, Glace Bay; brother James (Isabel), Halifax; sister Ethel, British Columbia; grandchildren Darren, Daniel, Alicia, Garrett, Morgan, Connor, Georgia; brothers in law Millar (Muriel) Bennett, Carson (Nora)Bennett; sisters in law Lillis Hawthorne, Clair Huckabone, Linda (Gerry) Kohlsmith, Joyce Bennett, all of Ontario; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant son Richard; son Kirk Andrew; sister Mayme; father and mother in law Andrew and Harriett (Millar) Bennett; brothers in law Arnold Bennett, Gordon Hawthorne, John Rooney, Joe Oldford.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2pm in Knox United Church with Rev. John Finlayson officiating. Burial to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Garden.
