James Cuthbert Penman

February 8, 1924May 11, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of James Cuthbert Penman on Monday, 11 May 2020, surrounded by his family at Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Dad was born on February 8, 1924 in Dunfermline, Scotland to Alexander and Joan (Struthers) Penman.

Dad is survived by his children, Byron (Catherine), Deborah (Jim Kiley) and Keith (Teresa); brother-in-law Hughie MacKinnon; grandchildren, Jillian, Nathan and Maria and numerous nieces and nephews. As well as his parents, Dad is predeceased by his loving wife Dolores of 63 years, infant sister Margaret, brother Alexander, sister Edith (McKinnon), granddaughter, Breanna, grandson, Daniel and nephew Allan.

Dad was well known and active in the community. He was a member of the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department and the Branch 5 Legion in Donkin. During the Second World War, he served in the Canadian Merchant Navy. He was a long time parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish in Port Morien. Dad was a coal miner, steel worker and professional painter – a longtime and proud employee of Pat Burns Painting Contractors. He was a well-respected musician playing in several local orchestras including the Everett Cann Orchestra. He was a gifted musician with a natural ear for music enabling him to play many instruments. Dad loved music and was always whistling a tune. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, watching television and being at the bungalow. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

The family would like to thank New Dawn, Cape Breton County Homemakers and the staff at Taigh Na Mara for their care in Dad’s later years.

Funeral arrangements to be posted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dad’s memory be made to the Cemetery Fund of St. Mary’s Church in Port Morien. Condolences to the Penman family can be made a www.pattenfuneral.com.
