February 3, 1927 – January 5, 2024
With heartfelt sadness, we, the family, regret to announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Rose, at the home of her daughter, Elma and son-in-law Kevin, in Halifax where she resided for the past two years on January 5, 2024.
Named after ‘Mama’, Rose was born in Bridgeport, Glace Bay where she resided the majority of her life with husband Lui, raising children Elma and Alan. She enjoyed a long career as a telephone operator at Maritime Tel. & Tel. for 38 years, before retiring in 1989. Of strong faith, Rose was a life-long member of Chalmers United Church in Dominion until its closing, subsequently attending Knox United Church in Glace Bay. Rose was active throughout her life – from bowling in her younger years, to tending her precious gardens, walking at Dominion Beach and ‘skating a band’ at one of the local rinks. Very talented and creative, she always had a sewing, knitting or crochet project on the go – ensuring the newest grand-niece or grand-nephew had a special outfit. Rose will always be remembered for her impeccable sense of style and quick wit.
Rose is survived by her devoted children, daughter Elma (Kevin) Farrell and son, Alan, both of Halifax; sisters-in-law Bruna (James) Bailey, Glace Bay and Sheila (Jackie) MacDonald, Sydney and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lui, in 2013. Rose was the last surviving member of the immediate family of John Archie and Rose (Rennie) MacDonald. She was predeceased by her nine brothers and sisters: Mabel (Tom) Tellum, Helen (Mikey) MacNeil, Billy (Marg), Hugh Alexander, Ruth (Gerald) Farrell, Muriel (Frank) Campbell, Elaine (Don) Arseneau, Rev. Jackie and Lydia (Bill) Boutilier.
Visitation will take place on Thursday January 11th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St, Glace Bay. Funeral services will take place at Patten Funeral Home on Friday January 12th at 2:00pm with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Reception to follow.
The family will always be grateful for the loving support provided to Mom over the years by her niece, Jacqueline Campbell. Special thanks also go out to the staff of Northwood Home Care, Bayshore Home Health, New Waterford Homecare Service Society and VON Canada.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Rose’s memory may be made to Northwood Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
