She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother, aunt, MeMa, friend, and more. The good memories over the years are too many to count. She was loved more than she would ever know!
Though, not much of a traveler, she spent her childhood years moving from town to town as her parents planted new churches along the way. However, at one such church she met Herb, her one and only husband-to-be. One Sunday, he randomly decided to attend that particular church with a friend. She got his attention merely by updating the attendance numbers on the board at the front of the church, and it was love at first sight. It wasn’t long before they married and started a future together! They raised two daughters with love and care, and who now have families of their own. Her greatest joy here on earth was the company of her family and close friends. And, Herb was the love of her life! She missed him terribly when he passed on to heaven in 2007.
Unbeknownst to Beth, she had the gift of listening to those were in difficulty or just needed someone to talk to... a counselor of sorts. Having been the daughter of a Baptist minister, she knew the importance of keeping confidences of those seeking counsel of her father or mother. She continued this practice during her 38 years of service as Secretary at the Grace Baptist Church where she helped many and made some very dear friends.
Her home church was Sherwood Bible Church for many years. She continued to attend physically as long as she was able until walking distances became a issue for her. After that, she attended virtually when it became available. She has always spoken of the people there as being a huge blessing to her even through her last days.
Beth Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Herb, and her parents Stan and Betty (Spain) Black. Survivors include her sister, Susan (Terry) Barker; daughter, Melissa (Hollis) Brown; daughter, Amy (Chris) Midkiff; grandchildren, Hollis Brown; Crystal (Christian) Basham; Kimberly (Chris) Shehan; Zachary Brown; Kira (Lance) Howerton; Kaitlyn (Dave) Gillie; and 5 great grandchildren, Rayna, Parker, Trinity, Madison and Talia. Also, many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
Her “visitation” has already been held these past many months through prayers, messages, cards and letters, phone calls, in-person visits, FaceTime calls, and surprises by special delivery! Her wish was to enjoy people while she was here, and not to have a visitation or big funeral after she was passed on to Heaven. We hope her faith in the Lord will give everyone the peace of knowing that’s where she will be found one day by those will be joining her there.
Per her request, her immediate family will have a short graveside service where her brother-in-law, Terry, will say a few words.
The family would ask for prayers during that time, and for all of those whose lives have been touched by Beth in some way, we ask for you to think of those great memories in honor of her life. Those memories can be shared on this site below.
Also, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be given to Grace Baptist Church - 3101 NE Vivion Rd, Kansas City, MO 64119, or Sherwood Bible Church - 4900 N Norton Ave, Kansas City, MO 64119.
