

Billy George Powell, 85, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on January 18, 2017. He was born on August 6, 1931 in Bonanza, Arkansas. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Nellie Powell, and his baby sister, Katherine. Survivors include his wife, Marcia; son, Duane; sister, Martha Styles (Harvey); and numerous nieces and nephews that he spoiled and adored. In 1951, Bill joined the Air Force and PROUDLY served his country for 20 years, during the Korea and Vietnam wars, traveling through the Middle East including Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Iraq and Turkey (to name a few). He retired with the rank of Master Sargent and received the Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the National Defense Service Medal. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, TX and Tachekawa Air Force Base in Japan. After retiring from the Air Force, Bill continued flying and was honored to be Chief Pilot for the State of Missouri for Governor Teasdale and Governor Bond. Bill also enjoyed flying for Garney Construction for 13 years and finally retired for the 2nd time in 1993. He was a member of the Ararat Shrine. He became a Shriner because of his love for children and the work that the Shriners do for children. He was also a member of the St. Joseph Scottish Rites and the Jenny Lind Blue Lodge. Bill was also a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist church where he served as a greeter, usher and was on the security team. Funeral Service with Military Honors 10:00am Monday Jan. 23, 2017 Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 1600 MO-291 Hwy Liberty, MO 64068. The family will receive friends Sunday Jan 22, 2017 at the church. Interment Yukon Cemetery Yukon, OK. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial gifts to Shriners Hospital or NorthCare Hospice House.
