His parents were Richard Bruce and Ora (Barthel) Mather. He was the oldest of three boys. He attended Munger Elementary School and Liberty High School. In order to graduate from Liberty, he worked out his tuition for two years by doing janitorial work at the school because his school district had been changed to NKC. Upon graduation, he worked at a bank for a short time and then a large feed company until they closed his division. He retired from a large greeting card corporation after 38 years of service.
He married Barbara (Bolar) Mather, and they were blessed with two sons, David Bruce and Douglas Edward. He enjoyed attending Central Bible Church for 25 years (now Sherwood Bible Church) and Northwest Bible Church since 1980 where he served as usher, on the hospitality team, and on the Missions Board, and as assistant treasurer for missions for many years. He was awarded the 1983 Lake Waukomis annual award for outstanding meritorious service benefiting the entire community. He worked on the Adopt-a-Highway program for the church and kept the church's landscaping looking nice for many years by mowing, picking up trash, etc. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. His first grandchild, Andy, gave him the nickname of “PaPa” and he was known by that name from then on.
His parents and two brothers (John and David) predeceased him.
Survivors include Barbara Mather, wife of 67 years, two sons, David and Douglas Mather, two grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda Mather, and three step-grandchildren, Kacee Reifsteck (husband Tyler), Karissa and Shelby Lloyd, and several cousins.
