Doris was born August 23, 1936, near Chapman, Kansas, to Gustav and Anna (Thiedemann) Czinczoll, German immigrants who built a life and raised their family on a Kansas farm. Doris grew up there with her sisters Ruth Ann “Ginger,” Mary “Mim,” and Leanna “Laddie.” She was “Dody” to her sisters, and the four remained close throughout life, always making time for a daily phone call.
Farm life made Doris independent early. She worked on the farm, and attended a one-room country school across the road. These deep roots lasted with her pride in being “a Kansas girl”, and love of growing flowers. She fondly remembered special moments early in life and later reflected, “Life on the farm was good”.
Music became one of the great threads of Doris's life. She learned piano, French horn, sang, performed in bands, and ensembles. She was awarded a musical scholarship to the University of Kansas, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree. She later became a music teacher, teaching both vocal and instrumental music, and once taught middle schoolers how to march in a parade.
While attending KU, Doris met William “Bill” Gorman, known to many as “Jeep.” Their courtship began when Bill flew an airplane to the Czinczoll farm and landed in her father's pasture, frightening the cows. Doris wasn't terribly impressed at first, but Bill persisted, and eventually, as Doris herself put it, “stole my heart.” They married at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Chapman, Kansas on August 23, 1958, Doris's 22nd birthday.
Doris and Bill settled in Kansas City and became the parents of four sons: Greg, Jeff, Mike and Danny. Family and community became the center of Doris's life; she was heavily involved in her sons’ activities including scouting, sports, and band. Her lifelong fandom of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals began during these years. She and Bill formed strong connections in their neighborhood and made many friends.
The family experienced deep sorrow when Bill died in 1977, leaving Doris with their four young sons. Less than three years later, their youngest son, Danny, died at age 13. Doris showed incredible strength through these losses, continuing to love her sons, work hard, and find reasons to laugh. The kindness of their community and their faith sustained them.
Doris became a business co-owner with her friend Jan Strub, creating a small tax and accounting business that they ran for more than 20 years. She became an active member of the Alpha Gamma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and continued this for the rest of her life. The women in her chapter care for one another like sisters.
Being a grandmother, and later, a great-grandmother, was Doris’ greatest joys. She believed in a little spoiling. Pumpkin pie, Cheetos, and M&M's were reasonable provisions at her house. Love, sweet treats, and beautiful moments with the little ones filled her later years.
Doris's Catholic faith was woven through her life. She was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. Everyone there, including the priests, called her “GG”, for Great-Grandma. Doris attended Mass faithfully and prayed the Rosary every night for her family. Doris ended one of her stories about her family with words that now seem a fitting way to end the story of her own life: “My family is the greatest! God Bless all of you.”
Doris is survived by her sons Gregory (Nicole) Gorman, Jeffrey (Tina) Gorman, and Michael (Renee) Gorman; her sisters Ruth Ann Gast, and Leanna Albers; nine grandchildren: Ryan, Wade, Will, Paige Rioux, Hannah McCoy, Seth, Tyler, Blake, and Shelby Mueller; fifteen great-grandchildren; and an extended family and circle of friends who were part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Gorman, her son Daniel “Danny” Gorman, her parents, Gustav and Anna Czinczoll, and her sister Mary Weishaar.
