Doris was born August 19, 1934 at home in Browning, Missouri to Robert and Velma Curtis May. They moved to Illinois for a short time, then back to Humphrey, Missouri, until she was in the eighth grade. The family then settled on a farm north of Trenton, Missouri and she graduated from Trenton High School in 1952.
Shortly after graduation, she and a close friend moved to Kansas City on a whim where she found a job with Folger's Coffee. It was there she met the love of her life, Donald Hartstack. Doris and Don were married on June 27, 1953 at Tindall Christian Church, north of Trenton. They shared a very loving and happy 63 years together until Don's death in 2016.
Doris worked as an assistant at Dr. Roberts, ENT office until the birth of their daughter, Denise, in 1959. She was a stay-at-home Mom until Denise married and then worked at the Jones Store Company for several years.
She was a 50-year plus member of Chapter KF P.E.O., a longtime member of Fairview Christian Church and was very active with Don during his years with the Ararat Shrine in Kansas City. She continued her support of the Masonic Organization through her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughters' involvement in Rainbow for Girls. She attended as many of their events as possible and most recently listened to their awards and achievements at the Nebraska Grand Assembly.
Doris, who they called "Nanny", loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She was always willing to play board games (even the dreaded Memory Game!), puzzles, coloring and pushing them on the swings. She was known for her cooking and baking for family and friends, especially her lemon cake and her coffee cake. She was very social, always organizing some sort of gathering for her friends at McCrite. She loved her outings to dinner theatre and the casino, card groups, hosting teas and happy hour with her friends. She and Don traveled extensively, but she was always happy to get back home.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Denise (Tom) Barber, Green Valley, AZ; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Laura (Jason) Carley and Belle; Leisa (Stacey) Hamilton and Ashlynn, Braylee, Hailey and Raelyn May; and Eric (Lucile) Barber and Liam; brother, James "Bud" (Katie) May; nieces and nephews, extended family and many caring friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Elaine Brown; great-granddaughter, Camryn; and sister-in-law and husband, Althea (Hartstack) and Dave Mathis.
