Ed was born on February 5, 1932 in Clever, Missouri, to Leo and Vernay Short. He graduated from North Kansas City High School and from William Jewell College with an Education and Biology degree and went on to earn a Master's Degree from Central Missouri State University. Ed also was an active member of the United States Marine Corps and was proud to serve this country that he dearly loved. He married his one true Valentine, Darlene Ann Davison, on October 14th, 1956. Ed worked in the North Kansas City School District for 37 years as principal of Winnwood Elementary School and as a science teacher at Eastgate Junior High. After 9 years of marriage, Ed and Darlene brought their daughter, Debbie, into the world. She was the apple of her daddy's eye.
The Northland area was home to Ed for most of his life. Community was important to Ed, and life was greatly enriched through his associations with neighbors in Sherwood Estates, co-workers in the North Kansas City School District, friends at Northgate Baptist Church, and all of his extended family. Ed was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandpa. He was passionate about his family. He was a dedicated educator, and was passionate about his students. He was a true patriot who was passionate about his flag and country. And Ed was a man of God, passionate about his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo John Short and Vernay Julia (Farris) Short, and his sister, Billie Rae Stephenson. Edward's legacy lives on, as he is survived by his wife, Darlene Short; his daughter, Debbie Douglas with her husband Chris Douglas of Overland Park, Kansas; and his grandchildren Jake Douglas with his wife Megan Douglas of Manhattan, Kansas; Coleson Douglas with his wife Aubrey Douglas of Gladstone, Missouri; and Sam Douglas at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
