

She was born September 10, 1931 in Caibarien, Cuba, to Pedro Luis Martinez and Maria Luisa Fernandez. Along with her husband and two young sons, she immigrated to the United States in 1962, settling in Kansas City, Missouri. She found her independence as a woman and supported her two sons, finding work as a seamstress for Betty Rose Coats and Suits in Kansas City. She remarried and moved to Chicago, Illinois, embarking on another passion decorating cakes for Jewel Grocers. Her children remember her as a kind, gentle, and strong woman, who encouraged them to pursue their goals. She was a thoughtful, understanding, and generous individual who loved people. She was an active and dedicated member of Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish, serving with the Altar Rosary Society and Cookie Ladies.
She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Guy Nugnes. “Elvi” is survived by her two children, Edward Aviles, and his wife Brenda Aviles, as well as Robert Aviles, and his wife Michelle Edgar, along with her grandchildren Hunter Aviles, and Crystal Aviles, together with grand and great grandchildren, and other family in Florida and Cuba.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Elvira will begin Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St Andrew The Apostle Parish, 6415 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, Missouri 64119 officiated by Father Vincent Rogers. Immediately following, a Committal Service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery, 5001 NE Cookingham Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64156.
