The 2022 New Year had just begun and as a family we were full of hope that this new year would bring happiness and healing. On the afternoon of the 3rd day of January we were not prepared for the sudden passing of one of the pillars of our family, Hanamel Margarejo Rada. He had just begun a valiant fight with cancer, when a complication ended the fight too soon leaving family and friends shocked and deeply saddened. He will be missed in so many ways, but he would assure us that our hope does not lie in what the new year brings, but in the promise that we will all be reunited on that bright morning when we will be together again.
Hanamel, also affectionately known as “Hany”, was born in Lopez, Quezon in the Philippines to Porferio and Eladia Rada. At an early age it was evident to his brothers and sisters that he was a very intelligent and charismatic individual with an incomparable work ethic. From shining shoes for a few pesos outside the local university at the age of seven to landing in America with only $30 in his pocket, he was determined to accomplish his goals, but fueled by his love to care for his family.
Hanamel arrived in Kansas City in 1967 and was a student at Bethany Hospital in the Radiology program. In 1969 there were two events that altered the course of his life. In June of that year, he welcomed a very “Active” son he named Paul, who unintentionally contributed to sleepless nights. A month later he joined North Kansas City Hospital, where through hard work and innovative thinking, he earned the position of Manager of Radiology and remained a valued and devoted employee for thirty-nine years. In 1972 he welcomed his daughter Karen into his life, and although there remains a minor protest from her brother, Karen was reported to be the “Perfect” child and shared a birthday with one of his favorite singers, Elvis Presley. In 1981 He met the love of his life, Louise. They were married in 1983 and have walked the same path together for forty years. They built a life of love, laughter, travel and deep mutual trust and respect.
Hanamel could be described as a quiet force of nature. He never complained about his workload or the years he often worked two full-time jobs. He was determined to provide for not just his immediate family, but his extended family and friends as well. There is not a narrative that would adequately describe how endlessly proud he was of his grandchildren. You could see it in the way he spoke about them, the look in his eyes as he watched them grow, and the hope he had for their futures.
He loved to travel and as an avid photographer has thousands of pictures depicting his adventures. He was a huge sports fan, his favorite teams being the Kansas City Chief’s and Royals. For many years you could find him in the stands between home plate and first base cheering on the Royals or almost levitating out of his chair from excited tension when watching a Chief’s game. He loved being outdoors. He loved to fish and was an avid golfer. He would hit the links before the sunrise so he could capture the moment and loved to play golf and fish with his brothers, which he did every year. He embraced quiet moments but was never happier than when he was with his family.
Hanamel is predeceased by both of his parents, his brothers Fred, Ephriam, and brother-in-law Mike, and his sister Eva. His life and legacy are carried on by his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his surviving brothers, Eliezer, Gideon, Israel, and sisters, Redeem and Nessie.
In lieu of Flowers memorial donations may be sent to organizations focused on pancreatic cancer, cardiac, or diabetes research and cure, as well as literacy programs, all which were important to Hanamel.
The family would like to thank North Kansas City Hospital, for caring for dad as one of their own. We would also like to thank Pastor Kayla and the Good Shepherd family for welcoming us into your home to celebrate his life. The time you have spent listening and providing comfort has been more valuable than we can express.
To all the family and friends who have traveled near and far, and those only able to be here in spirit, we love you and are grateful.
A memorial celebration of life service will be held at Good Shepherd KC Gladstone church located at 2800 NE 64th Street, Gladstone, MO 64119 on Sunday January, 9th. The visitation with family will be from 1:00 - 1:50, memorial service and sharing of memories from 2:00 - 3:30 tentatively.
