He was a former resident of Kansas City North and Liberty, Missouri. Harold was born on January 8, 1925 in Kansas City, KS to parents Anna and Fermin Winkle of Independence, MO. He had one sister, Londaline, one brother, Robert, and a foster-brother, Arthur (Bud) Hook who preceded him in death. His childhood and youth were filled with helping on his family’s dairy farm, school, and sports. He joined the army for WWII and served as PFC in Germany and France through the final phases of the war and post-war efforts. On return from duty, he became a flooring craftsman along with Jim McNerney. Then on November 11, 1947, Harold married Frances Baldwin. Three years later in 1950 Harold and Jim started their own business, North Kansas City Carpet and Linoleum, and enjoyed 40 years of partnership. At the same time Harold and Frances raised a family of 3 children while living in Kansas City North. During his career and into retirement, Harold and Frances loved to travel all over the US and to many other countries. With the children gone, Harold and Frances moved to Liberty where they retired. Neighbors there knew them as active members on Liberty Hills Country Club with wonderful years sharing a passion for golf, friends, and their winter home in Green Valley, Arizona. Besides golfing, retirement was a time to develop a talent and enthusiasm for woodworking, including furniture, clocks, and especially exceptionally artistic bowls. But Harold’s most pleasure during retirement came watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
Harold is survived by his wife of 72 years, Frances; daughter and spouse, Janis and Bob Macoubrie; 2 sons and spouses, Mark and Jeannine Winkle, Michael and Kyle Winkle; 6 grandchildren (Janis’s children Jennifer Emery and Jeff Macoubrie, Mark’s children Matthew and Elizabeth Winkle, Michael’s children Adam Winkle and Anna Filbert); and 4 great-grandchildren (Jennifer’s daughter Jillian, Jeff’s daughters Sarah and Alexandra, and Anna’s son Elijah).
