Herbert Edgar Appleby, 78, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away at his home on Monday, August 11, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was the son of Herbert H. Appleby and Anna May-Williams-Appleby-Stout.
Herbert graduated from North Kansas City High School. He was married to Beverly Mae Peters-Dwyer-Appleby. He was the father to four children: two daughters, Diana and Lisea; and two sons, David and Jason.
He served in two US Military branches – first the US Navy followed by a second enlistment to the US Army, joining the 4th Engineer Battalion 4th Infantry Division. Herbert was sent to Vietnam and fought in three of the 17 campaigns and was severely wounded by an overwhelming ground attack with rocket fire, small arms and an exploding mortar round.
Herbert was decorated with: three Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallentry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge, Republic of Vietnam Civic Actions Honor Medal and First Class Unit Citations.
He is survived by a sister, Betty Noah; eight grandchildren: Brian Dwyer, Christopher Hill, Chelsea Heitman, Jacob Appleby, Anthony Appleby, Brody Dwyer, Lukas Hudson and Sophia Hudson; five great-grandchildren: Zoey Dwyer, Fallon Dwyer, Oliver Dwyer, CC Dwyer and Eloise Heitman.
Visitation will be 12-1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m., Friday, August 15 at Newcomer’s White Chapel Funeral Home, 6600 NE Antioch Rd., Gladstone, MO 64119. Committal service will follow at White Chapel Cemetery.
