Ida, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed peacefully, surrounded by family on August 30, 2022. She was born in Columbia, MO and moved to Bluffton, MO as a toddler. She remained in Bluffton, MO until high school age when she moved to Kansas City, MO to attend Paseo High. She had a beautiful soprano voice and subsequently studied voice at the UMKC Conservatory of Music. She lived about 40 years in the Village of Oakwood Manor upon marriage to her husband of 29 years, Kenneth Mayor. She raised three daughters. She was an amazing mother. She had incredible energy and enthusiasm for life and an unstoppable can-do attitude which permeated everything she did. If you wanted something done and done right, Ida was the one to ask.
She worked for many years at Farmland Industries and sold Home Interiors and Stanley Home Products in the evening. Ida married Bill Clayton in 1989. Their marriage was a happy one. She retired from Farmland in 1992 and began a company (Laser Supercharge) with Bill servicing printer cartridges. Their successful business venture was sold when Bill turned 70. Ida and Bill moved to Lake Waukomis in 2002. They shared their beautiful home and lake generously with family and friends. Ida loved to entertain and she and Bill created so many happy memories thru the years for others. Ida was an excellent cook and baker. Holiday dinners would be complete with a beautifully decorated table and a beautifully decorated home. Throughout her life she gave of her time and talents as a PTA member, room mother, Girl Scout Leader, Girl Scout Mid America Council Woman, Unity Church committee member, Unity Church choir member, Lake Waukomis Women's club member, Democratic Party Women's club member and a Planned Parenthood volunteer. She always went the extra mile, always kept her word and always kept her commitments. She taught her daughters to do likewise. Ida moved to Wexford Place 2 1/2 years ago and spent the last six months of her life living with her daughter Cynthia, son-in-law Larry, and grandson Seth. Eternal gratitude to them for making her final months ones filled with two special parties just for her, morel mushroom hunting at age 91 (really!) and love-lots and lots of love. Ida's physical presence will be missed but her stellar influence upon those who knew her and loved her will live on.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Clayton, her daughter, Elizabeth Mayor Dowell, her son-in-law Rick Brown and her brother, Hal Miller.
She leaves behind her daughter Cynthia Mayor Smith and son-in-law Larry of Buckner, MO, daughter Valori Mayor Brown of Shawnee, KS, step daughter Tracy Clayton Naylor of Independence, MO, step-sons Scott Clayton of Excelsior Springs, MO, and Doug Clayton of Atlanta, GA, grandsons Dean Dowell of Eugene, OR, Garrett Dowell of Arlington, VA, Seth Smith of Buckner, MO and step-granddaughter Gina Naylor of Kansas City, MO.
A Memorial Service will be held in her honor on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 1 pm at Unity Church of Kansas City North, 1000 NE Barry Road, Kansas City MO 64155. A reception immediately follows in Fellowship Hall.
