Jane was born on November 23, 1940 at her family’s home in rural Linn County, Missouri to Ruth (Maxwell) Irick and Ora Irick. She graduated from Meadville High School in 1958. Soon after graduating, Jane moved to Kansas City, where she began working for the Safeway Store District Office as a Accounts Payable clerk and remained there for six years.
Jane married William “Bill” Allen, machinist, in July, 1967. Over the next eight years the couple lived in California and Texas, and had two children before returning to the Kansas City area to settle in Indepence. Jane was active in their daughters’ lives, serving as a dedicated volunteer at her daughters’ schools throughout their elementary, junior high, and high school years, and active in their participation in Camp Fire. Her children remember her as a dedicated, supportive, and loving mother who encouraged them to learn new skills and take part in a wide variety of experiences as well as to pursue their goals.
Jane served as a teacher’s aid in the preschool program at Christ United Methodist Church. A highlight of Jane’s later career was applying the office skills to the small business she and Bill ran, Allen Tool Company. She also held leadership roles in Camp Fire Boys and Girls of Kansas City.
Jane was an accomplished seamstress who created beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters, including their prom and wedding dresses. She applied these skills in a professional capacity by working in the alterations department of David’s Bridal. She also used her sewing skills for quilting and shared them generously with her quilting group.
Jane was a sweet and loving person who touched the lives of many young people through her volunteerism and opening her home to her daughters’ friends. She shared a love of the outdoors with her family and the girls in her Camp fire club. She was an active and dedicated member of the Starlight Theater Ambassadors for many years and found great joy in supporting the theater, casts, and crews.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Ora Irick of Brookfield, Missouri and her siblings, Orcen Irick of Glendale, Arizona, Cecil Irick of Raymore, and Nila Bishop of Lee’s Summit.
